    Jury Duty

Yo Bob, that letter has your name and address on it. Delete asap

I have jury duty next week. Timing sucks but I always try to do my civic duty. I think part of the problem with our legal system is we often end up with a bunch of morons on the jury.

It was funny he, the owner of the multi-million contracting business, took the stand in his work boots and flannel shirt like he just came in from a job site. Total d-bag.
    What was the verdict?

A former coworker of mine ended up being jury foreman in the Bill Cosby trial. Missed a ton of work, fully sequestered with sheriff escort to/from court and their hotel. Interesting experience, but not one I'd really want to have.

So have I. Got the first one deferred because I was doing a contract job for a foreign company that would've docked my pay. The second I took, but was never called. The next I just ignored. The following one went to an old address.

Sebastian Junger wrote in one of his recent books if you want to serve your country without carrying a gun: Vote, donate blood, and serve your time on jury duty.

I did 4 weeks on a Medicare fraud trial the Armenian mob was running a decade ago. Interesting process, shut down a lot of folks who were getting millions from Medicare that should have been going to treat folks in need.

At the time it was a 3 million dollar suit by the city and the jury settled on $800k. Lots of dorks on the jury IMHO. The contractor was on video saying it was a done deal, no problem from finishing the job. Contract included no charge orders for unexpected conditions.

Serving on a grand jury was one of the most frustrating and eye opening experiences I've ever had.

So many low IQ people getting the facts confused constantly. Pretty scary actually

Was pulled in two weeks ago (assault case). Took my seat in the box, grilled by the prosecution and defense (answered everything honestly). I was the first one to be released by the prosecution. As much as I enjoyed my 3hr ride that afternoon, I was actually thinking that it would be interesting experience to go through the entire process.

being in a small town I get called for jury duty once a year
always get out of it pretty easy to do
if its criminal I know off the bat that most of the charges are garbage cause cops and the da throw anything at a person to see if the charges stick usually one charge is good enough but they will go with twelve or more counts if they can
my ex had 62 charges that was brilliant the prosecutor from the da's office dressed like shit and her whole court room demeanor and posture was that of an 11 year old it was embarrassing

tips for an A plus court room appearance my acting skills always pay off when battling w people (as long as your not the plaintiff or defendant) wear the shittiest clothes you have lucky for me I have nasty work clothes unfortunately hats are prohibited which is a bummer cause a greasy ball cap is a winner keep your mouth open at all times be a mouth breather I usually count things over and over when in the jury box ceiling tiles panels on the woodwork look for patterns in the flooring actually concentrate on all that stuff answer questions but don't answer them talk in circles act easily confused once I was asked about what I browse on the internet and I said alot of porn that didn't work out too well smile and wink at the plaintiffs lawyer or the prosecutor when being asked to leave

the fucking court system looks and seems intimidating but thats how lawyers and govt want it to be its actually pretty basic and somewhat easy to navigate once you get some experience this is the downfall of our society that people get caught up in the system and fucked over because public defenders are too strung out with too many clients paid too little all companies and da's want to avoid trials and hearings at all costs

Older woman (uphill skier) runs into a dude below her. Woman fucks her shoulder badly. She sues him. He's with an instructor who witnesses the collision. We are all skiers/borders on the jury. 11-1 in favor of the guy who was downhill. Took us probably 10 minutes.

I assume the woman's lawyer told her we would feel sorry for her and reward her the $500,000 he asked for. Sorry lady...

I'm over 15 years out since the last time I gut the letter. I usually try to get picked. But, pretty sure wearing a BLM shirt or Kaeppernick jersey will get anyone challenged if they don't want to di that civic duty..

I’ve been selected for jury pool maybe six times, been seated three. Two while as an undergrad (which I used to get a postponement on a midterm) and once in Multnomah County OR 30 years later.

The last one was entertaining. Defendant was being tried for felony theft with a three-strike enhancement. He was part of a white gang - had ink all over that he was trying to hide.

He and a friend decided to steal some Allen wrenches from a big box store ($20 value). Alcohol was a contributing factor. Store security tried to detain them, buddy tried a karate kick on security, fell and split his head open. Defendant turned to run but his low rider pants fell down, he tripped, face-planted and came to a stop at the feet of an off-duty cop walking into the store.

Two day trial which was 1.5 days too long IMO. It took us about 15 min to decide defendant was an asshole, but wasn’t guilty of the felony as charged. I was jury foreman so had to fill out the decision form. I did my duty on the face of the form, flipped it over to the empty back side and wrote “we the jury find the defendant guilty of felony stupidity in the commission of a misdemeanor”.

Judge looked at the form, flipped it over and started laughing. Then read the formal decision.

The jury had to walk by defendant single file on way out of court room. He was profusely thanking each of us. I was last to pass him and when he said “thank you sir” I replied “don’t thank me you’re still a fucking moron”.

Have you searched his name since? Was that a wake up call or is he now serving life?

My wife clerked for a few years. She has some pretty gnarly stories from cases her judge heard during her time there as he randomly was assigned a number of high profile violent crime cases.

Her advice for getting out of jury duty is to show up, but anytime you are instructed to not do something or it would disqualify you... immediately do it. Usually its them not wanting you to share personal details or something along those lines (job, age, first name, etc). And they will NEVER actually charge you with contempt, etc as thats just more paperwork the overworked staff has to do.

Never did. He’s likely doing state time for something - as the arresting officer noted “defendant is well known in the county’s criminal justice system”. They served him on the felony charge when he was defendant at another court hearing.

No illusions that my snarky comment had any impact

    Dovetails nicely with Occams Razor.
