I have heard this from a couple of sources now. HBO almost canceled The Wire after season 3 I think and the critics and die hard fans kept asking for more. Last I heard there isn't enough interest with the general public to keep the show going. I think of all the shows HBO makes, The Wire is least popular right now. Sadly, Entourage is more though provoking and interesting to people than The Wire. Argh.

^^^I don't think so. Though he is in Marlo's crew so that might have been him.

No spoilers, except to say that the finale is almost an hour and a half long. Enjoy.

    Wow, that finale was... WOW.

No surprises, but god could they give us something to cheer about? How depressing reality is.

I read that it was the writers' decision to end it after next season, not HBO. They basically said that they had tapped their knowledge as deeply as they could and there wasn't anything left that they knew enough about to explore up to their standards. As an example they mentioned that exploring the influx of Latino immigrants to the city could be very interesting, but they simply haven't had enough experience with that group to do it properly.

Personally, I'm just getting into the show. Caught the second half of this season, got hooked, and have plowed through the first two seasons in about 3 weeks.

By far the best show ever on TV, and some of the best film making ever as well. Simply amazing.

As is rank stupidity and a totally vapid personality.

The Wire kicks massive fuckin' gargantuan King Kong ass. Why "Entourage" would be more popular is something that only a total idiot could explain.

While that's true, even if you could avoid having soldiers fall on their swords, you still would have the massive problems of (1) product demand, which grows out of a totally fucking hopeless life without meaning and decent employment; and (2) the temptation of easy money for doing almost nothing (bottom and mid-level drug sales).

The best thing about The Wire is how they show that these problems are massively compounded by the fucked up nature of the police force (all politics, no understanding of human nature, no compassion, no logic or morality), the city government (ditto), and the way the "business community" would rather see under-table fat profits than a healthy, vibrant city.

Fuuuuuuuuuuck! I just realized I am going to be in Costa Rica for the first two episodes and I don't have OD. Anyone know any torrent sites that may have them?

edit: just read the WSJ article, only 10 episodes!?!?! Pretty fucking weak on HBO's part.

    Excellent first episode.

The opening pre-intro scene is one of my favorite Wire scenes ever.

I've heard some nonsense that episodes 1, 2, 5, and 7 have leaked or something.

I know 1-7 were released to critics.

I've only watched 1 on On Demand since I heard the quality on the remainder was terrible (plus there's no way in hell I'm watching them out of order).

Episode 1 seems to be around on torrent sites (if you can't find it PM me).

Charter sucks ass. I setup an appointment to have them come and fix my cable box so I can get my On Demand working, and they don't even have HBO On Demand. And on top of that, I'm going to be gone for the season opener this weekend. Again, behold the power of TiVo!

Good stuff last night I'm stoked on this season.
People should learn endurance; they should learn to endure the discomforts of heat and cold, hunger and thirst; they should learn to be patient when receiving abuse and scorn; for it is the practice of endurance that quenches the fire of worldly passions which is burning up their bodies.

    Avon's back! Avon's back!

I could not be more dismayed, knowing there are only 8 episodes left.

Gimme some Omar, please. Here's hoping he dishes out the justice on Marlo. I do love Snoop though, I must confess.

Blast! I got Charter to fix my cable box, but The Wire doesn't show up under HBO On Demand. Anyone else use Charter getting the same thing? Or is it just me? Either way, waaaaaah.....
