9/23/06 Rabbit Ears Pass TR (Pictures coming)
Crew: Squatch, nick>jesus, CrackerPlease, and young Maxwell
Location: Rabbit Ears Pass, CO
Date: 9/23/06
Objective: Pow. Lots of it.
So this girl I know has a place in Steamboat, which we thought would work out freakin' sweet for us after skiing what was to be some super sweet northerly-storm deepness. We were ambivalent at the start of the day knowing that the "northerly" may have been more "central" (it was) and that we may end up kicking ourselves for not skiing in Summit County (we did). However, we (I?) had ulterior motives of crashing with some same-age potentially cute girls (which we did not do because the place was crowded as shit and because I want to ski tomorrow). Me and my fucking mixed up priorities.
Anyway, we left here at 7 30 after Squatch cooked a big breakfast of eggs and bacon (he smelled like bacon, which I took as a great sign for the day). We rolled up to Rabbit Ears around 11 and just said "well... let's just go ski some shit," not really having much beta on what would be good. Bootpacked and bushwhacked through trees and skied a few ridges over, finding ourselves disappointed at both the depth and the quality of snow (it was about 10 inches deep at best--not much wind transport at all--and very wet and gloppy). The snow was so slow that we could barely make any turns, especially since we picked the wrong faces for skiing anything over 20 degrees with any kind of sustained vert. So we decided to build a kicker and just hit that until the landing was douched. Got creative with some photog shit and then rolled into Steamboat at about 5 for delicious burritos.
Like I said, I wish I had stuck around and gotten some lighter, deeper goodness an hour and a half closer, but it was still a really fun day. I am absolutely destroyed and am hoping to ski tomorrow, so I will post pictures when I get around to it (probably Tuesday if not tomorrow).
Glad to see so many of you mags got after it today!Days on snow 06-07: 3

you could have just asked. I would have told you we don't have much snow and saved you the drive. Sorry you didn't bag the girl at least. That sucks! However, this is Steamboat not Boulder and unfortunately that is the way it goes sometimes. I'll be sure to let you know when it starts puking up here. Maybe we can hook up and ski.

Max, I hope the pics you're going to post are of the women, and not the crappy skiing.

There is more than one post-worthy (IMO) ski pic though. If only for just taking air.
I'll have them up later tonight. Gotta study BIO now."I said flotation is groovy"

Sorry, I'm at the library but my ADD won't let me stay away from this damn place.
The interview went well, I think. I hear back from them sometime tonight. I'll let you know later on.
Pics are coming in a couple hours, I promise. Just got a little more of this chapter to refresh on and then I'm heading home.Days on snow 06-07: 3

Perfect timing for the board to come back up. I just finished editing. Here are some pics (we spent most of our "skiing" time in the air, so that's what most of the pictures are... better suited here than newschoolers though cuz I'm in a fullface ).
We started off having to cross the creekbed, which proved pretty difficult this early in the season.
Sasquatch struggling but succeeding.
Then we were off bootpacking through the woods.
Gearing up
Then we decided to ski a northeast facing, pretty mellow tree shot off the first ridge, but everyone skied off before I could get the camera out (need imnprovement in this area). Those turns were by far the best of the day, and I'm sorry I missed the shots.
The next ski was I think a northwest facing SUPER mellow meadow. The snow was really slow so it was hard to make turns of any sort.

Then it was time to build a kicker. With 4 shovels and some stoke it was cake.

CrackerPlease again. I like this one. Particularly if it were bluebird.
"Powder to the People" exclaims Squatch in the air!
Nick in the bad roo shot
Squatch with the little bit of (non-verbal) spray we saw all day
And some sequence shots to top it off:
Sorry we didn't get some more pow shots, guys, but all in all we had a damn good time tromping around in the snow for a day. Oughtta find somebody who knows Rabbit Ears next time to show us the goods.
On a side note, I was trying to take some of the kicker pictures with a purpose, so I'd appreciate some constructive criticism on exposure (almost all of these were between f4.5 and f6.0 at fast shutter speeds) and composition (wish I had done some of them a little differently, particularly John in the black and white cutting off his head).Last edited by Deep Days; 09-25-2006 at 01:31 AM.
