I'll be heading up to Timberline tomorrow if anyone wants to meet up and carpool from Portland/Troutdale/Sandy. Just shoot me a PM.

Total gaper question, but can you skin up the Palmer snowfield when the lifts are operational or do they make you buy a pass? Any idea pass price this time of year?
Thanks, Alembical

You'll have to hike up most of the Magic Mile lift in dirt to get to the snow first......
I can't believe you want to ski 6" of slop (If they get the chair open) after you just got back from NZ. You are a complete retard.

I'll be in SLC with an ankle brace and full body helmet should you need one...

Tickets are $42 (I presume they didn't change it from Summer -> Fall).
Who cares if it's 6" of slop, it's skiing in September.
Sure $42 is a rip off, but it's the cheapest way to get my skis back on some snow before Thanksgiving.

I've seen people skinning when the lifts were running, but as midget says, you'll have to walk a bit to get to the snow.

Walking "a bit" is a pretty big understatement. You'd have to hike the entirety of Magic Mile and then probably the bottom 2/3 of Palmer since all there was from mid-way at Palmer to the base was a 3-cat wide snow ribbon, which would be pretty unsafe to skin up. Then once you got to the snow field you'd have to figure out some place to actually skin up, since a lot of the snow field is taken up by race training and freestyle camps.

Oh yeah, didn't get to ski any pow in NZ - though the 666's nailed some in the Heli while the rest of us were at the Club fields.
Almost forgot- lift tickets listed as $36.00 on their website. Normally wouldn't even consider Timberline (hell, I rarely would in the summer) but there is something crazy about going just to go tomorrow because it's mid-September!

There is no freestyle camps going on in September. Maybe a couple lanes of gates but most racers this time of year do their training in the Southern Hemisphere or Europe.
The ribbon of death would probably be pretty sketchy to hike though as ptavv said......didn't think of that.

Looks like I was wrong, tickets drop to $36 in the Fall (and they push opening back to 8:30).
In any case, I skied at Timberline last Sept after going to Argentina for two weeks at the end of August.
It's skiing, in September. No better way to get your fix until the ski movie tours hit town, then you can start hiking for turns, then the mountains open.Last edited by ptavv; 09-15-2006 at 05:18 PM.
