I'm sad to see him go. He was fun to watch with the kids- the movie is great.

He enjoyed life to the fullest, and was a jedi master at self promotion. How many spancered skiers are working it as hard as they can- just for peanuts and free sticks. I don't fault them; or him.

He just made millions doing it.

I'm sure he had plenty of close calls that made him think about the ramifications of the actions creating those large bank deposits.

He donated large amounts of his earnings to his zoo and general wildlife conservation.

    A very unique person.

While I'm sure he didn't object to making money, I doubt it changed his approach or his lifestyle. It mostly meant his expeditions and zoo were better funded. He lived a good life, onya Stevo.

The family have requested it be released, to show the world how he died doing what he loved.

    Unhappy

    RIP Steve.

Honestly, I think he did more to get kids interested in the wild than any other TV persona that I can remember. In a time where conservation efforts have taken a back-seat to other things, I'm glad he reached some of the audiences he did.

True and very apparent. While kayaking yesterday in LI Sound, a school of blues began frantically feeding all around us. It was unbelievable how many there were! The water turned RED with blood! They were bouncing off our kayaks and paddles... I only wish I had a net or line! It was one of those rare experiences that make you realize the raw power and cruelity of nature... The bigger fish wins.

Steve Irwin was entertaining and exciting to watch, but I am not surprised to hear this sad news. He flirted with death for a living. RIP

I did the stingray city trip when I was in the Caymans. Apparently, they come swarming in when boats approach as they had once been conditioned to being fed by the castoff bait from local fishermen, and now cruise ship tourists. It was an awesome experience swimming in the water and having a fleet of 20-30 rays with 6 to 8 foot wingspans come silently converging on you at once. They are extremely gentle creatures, and will allow you to hold them and feed directly from your hand. I remember our guide describing them as "big, sweet labrador retrievers with a lawn dart tied to their tail". As long as you were cognizant of the barb, they were pretty much harmless. In fact, they are all but unaware of the barb and rarely use it as a weapon, even when threatened.

This guys wife was hot right? Anybody have a picture? Who has dibs?

It always seems more tragic to me when a guy with a hot wife passes early.

On a serious note - in my mind Irwin was an iconic figure of our time who died doing something he absolutely loved in a wonderful place. I've visited Port Dougy and did my first scuba dive ever out of that area, inspired me to come home and pursue my diving certs. Tragic incident, but I'm sure he would have rather gone this way than almost any other. Nobody gets out of here alive. Death by stingray barb to the heart exploring one of earths gems seems like a fine way to exit in style.

    RIP Steve Irwin.

Does anyone else think that dying doing what you loved to do is the ultimate kick in the nuts?

I love skiing really deep snow, dying while skiing really deep snow would suck ass.

Dying in your sleep at 90 years old having led a great life is the only "good" way to go.

Im pretty sure that this guy would have picked a different way to die if he had the choice and I bet it would have been a few more years down the road.

But when you fuck with wild animals long enough eventually your gonna get dead or at least really fucked up.

i beg to differ even though its a matter of opinion i would prefer to die skiing or doing something i love with the people i love than die in a bed. I personally knew someone who died skiing in tahoe they were 69 years old and still had life ahead of them but it sure was a way to go he was there with his family and friends and i suppose he was happy on that mountain. I want to die doing something awesome and be remembered for it.

I agree with AKA, I've always thought that. Guy crashes his NASCAR car - "he died doing what he loved", well fuck me, I think he woulda preferred doing more of what he loved and dying later on. Lots of examples leap to mind but I'm not going there.

Will we ever do it all? What's enough?

Somewhere in the cosmos there must be these dudes who, like Basque sheepherders, come up the mountain for the roundup. Every so often they catch someone. Or, like Bullet, someone escapes by doing the duck and cover, found by luck, and carries on to tell the story. When the big time clock in the sky punches you out, well, you're out.
