A few dead leaves floating down the Nooksack when I take the dog swimming.
Pretty dark and chilly when I wake up.
Actually had to don a fleece vest for the morning dog-walk the other day.
Pretty sure I heard the quiver rustling restlessly when I walked into the garage a few nights ago...
Yey yep, she's a turnin' all right, as we race away from the sun....

New (to me) Bro's in my living room...
yep... the change she is a coming...
edit because this had to be xposted from Powder:
After 32 years on the shelves, some people still want to know what Powder magazine is all about. So I will tell you. We are that indescribable sensation first thing on a waist-deep day when you push off from the lift, haul ass down a cat track, and launch into an open bowl so filled with promise that you wouldn’t trade your next 10 turns for anything on earth. We are the feeling that fills a bar late on a Friday night when there’s a party raging inside and a storm raging outside and everyone keeps looking out the window just to stare at fat flakes drifting through darkness. We are every working stiff whose head moved him away from a ski town but whose heart remains there and always will. We are both the kids dropping into halfpipes and the ones stuck somewhere the mountains aren’t. We are the sound of ski boots kicking up a ridge at dawn. We are East and West, backcountry and frontcountry, Argentina and Alaska and Aspen. We are not just words on a page, we are the feeling you get after reading them. We are the language of winter. We are skiers.
Welcome home.–Tom Bie

I've been skiing through summer here, but there is still a feeling of renewal that hits.
Summers used to mean more to me, and for sure last longer. Originally, growing up in the desert of NM summer was basically nine months long, with a brief cold winter. Those proportions have basically reversed living here. Three months of heat making it difficult to sleep are rewarded with nine months of better rest...except for when I'm getting up horribly early to get first tracks.
Two weekends ago I was in Vegas poolside at Mandalay Bay in the 104 degree heat, drinking mojitos and daquiris. One weekend later I was back here up on the continental divide on a lovely white ribbon of death getting my month in. Getting out of the car and feeling that brisk early morning mountain air was enough. That contrast was enough to set it off, and allow me to turn.
My new Gotamas arrived in the mail, which I had to call my local shop to see if they'd mount for me during their kayak season (which they will). Dropping them off tomorrow! The first Skiing arrived, always good for a laugh and stoke. The gaper-packed but always fun mob scene that is Sniagrab is in three weekends, and my company just got our pre-sale invite notice. Even if I don't buy shit there, it's fun just for the vibe. Making plans for the ski porn party at my place, of course coupled with all the fall premiers. Lesse. A friend just called me from Pennsylvania (lives here, just visiting her folks there) just to say she bought ski pants there. Hints like these just continue to drop.
Finally, my ski pass renewal just hit my credit card bill I noticed yesterday. Kinda screwed with my short term budget a bit because I forgot which week they said it was gonna hit, but hey.
All these signs say I've turned. Almost one month from today last year we got two feet up on Berthoud Pass, so I have to be ready.
Ready to fookin' ski.

It just happened.
I skied into July this year, some decent lines, way more than patch skiing for sure, but summer has still felt way too long. I've been jonesing for winter for months, but feeling a distict chill in the air for the past week, and seeing snow on top of the bridgers today has upped it to a whole other level.
This thread sealed the deal https://www.tetongravity.com/forums/n...te=1&p=1420724
I can't fucking wait.

In the waved meatdream heat last night, through stickpitted zombie leaded air, a cooling little gust blew dead leaves spinning onto the dry drive. The light was that glinting angled amber through some trees.
And I remembered Xover's note of last year. So I'll bump it because I felt the turn.Merde De Glace On the Freak When Ski

I wish Xover posted here more.
His enthusiasm is unsurpassed by anything, except maybe his love of the sport. Need more of that.

Summer is just starting here. We have fog pretty much all the way through to August, then it's super hot in Aug, Sept, Oct.
But, I'm starting to get excited about the prospect of snow.Artist formerly known as yogachik.

There were low clouds on top of Snowbird this morning, but it was hotter than hell. No turn yet folks, maybe in 6 weeks.

thanks for bumping this most special thread
while i've got some summertime goals yet to accomplish before the first flake flies around here [hell, the wildflowers are just reaching peak - as witnessed by trackhead's timp tr], i must admit that tonight for this first time since my soul can feel it - i both felt and believe we had officially "turned" around SLC - i.e. the hottest days of this summer are behind us and for the next while the larger percentage of the days will be cooler than the last.
tonight, for the first time in a long time, actually had to roll up my window on the way home from the Wingcoop 'cause i was cold. ripping around the neighborhood streets on my supa smooth cruiser was so much fun with the feet in the air feeling the cool, cool below 70 degree breeze on my face causing me to smile and giggle uncontrollably, like a mini-pre party, while also invigorating me to rip a few more laps ..... to me that's the start of the "turn" .... feeling that first cooler than the day before breeze, different smell in the air, etc. that is all to familiar ..... my mind, heart and body may be lagging a little - holding onto summer, but my soul is right in tune with what Mother Nature is teasing us all with right now.
My soul let me know that it felt the "turn" tonightLast edited by Xover; 08-12-2008 at 01:27 AM.
