A few others that come to mind are:

    Superchunk
    Pegboy
    Chelsea
    Volcano Suns

If you like girl punk, consider:

    The Slits
    L7
    Seven Year Bitch
    Sleeter-Kinney
    Daniel Ortega eats here.

A couple of off the wall additions:

    The Dickies-The Incredible Shrinking Dickies
Kind of a tongue in cheek punk, with killer playing. I can justify the album purchase solely on their cover of Paranoid, one of my all time favorite covers. The original release was on 12" urine yellow vinyl. Still have my copy.

Pere Ubu-Dub Housing or Terminal Tower, for an overview
Might not be considered "punk" by those coming late to the party, although it was groundbreaking at the time.

    And, as already noted:

Dead Kennedys-Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables
If this doesn't deliver a knock out punch, I don't know what will. Scathing, uber black lyrics, delivered in a full on snarl by Jello Biafra, backed a sonic powerhouse of a band. They had it all in one package. Jello's legal issues with his bandmates are the stuff of legend.

    X-Los Angeles
Dark fun. Exene Cervenka's vocals may be an acquired taste but the skewed harmonies with John Doe are magic to my ears.

For a little context, check out:

    The Clash-Rude Boy
Not a great movie, but you can get a better sense of how it all came about.

im sorry, but the pixies are the best band of my generation.

i dont know AFI very well, i just listend to a couple preview tracks, if you like the more recent bubblegum punk bands, i guess you might like AFI better.

but if your favorite punk bands are X, Black Flag, DK, and Fugazi (Brendan Canty produced The Thermals most recent album) and you like stripped down old school punk, then The Thermals kick AFI's ass ten different ways. AFI does have more ink though.

Dude, everyone knows that Blink 182 is the best punk band ever. Followed closely by Green Day.

Fez, clearly I really need to work on my sarcasm. I’ve seen the Thermals and they’re good. Check-out the new(ish) records from Erase Errata and the Young Widows, while they’re not reviving the sounds of yesteryear they are punkasfuck.

yeah Greydon, i got the sarcasm. I may live in montana, but i'm not from montana. not sure what it is, but montanans never get sarcasm. since i had never heard AFI, i had to check them out before i could say they suck. i checked them out, they suck.

and freeskisquaw, greatest punk album of the last 15 yrs? my ass! fugazi has put out 5 albums since 91, that should sum it up right there. afi isnt fit to carry fugazi's intruments.

    how are the thermals live?
and ill check out those other bands for sure.

Haha youre so funny. Just because their new album isnt great doesnt mean that they suck. Listen to Shut your mouth and open your eyes, black sails in the sunset and the art of drowning. All three of those albums are excellent examples of a band's evolution from hardcore/punk to a different sound. Mabye they arent the best band of our generation, but they certainly are good. They also put on one hell of a live show, their fans are like no other.

Yes I am. But not as funny as the kid who claims AFI are the best punk band since 1990. Have you ever heard the punk bands Skidrow or Poison? They were killing it 15 years ago and they look and sound a bit like AFI.

I'm a big fan of pretty much any band Brendan Kelly has been in:
    Slapstick
    The Broadways
The Lawrence Arms (awesome f-ing live show...)
    The Falcon

    then other random stuff:

    Honor system
    the ghost
    the wunder years
    American Steel
    Dillinger Four
    Hot Water Music
    The Draft
    NOFX
    Rise Against
    Samiam
    Refused
    One Man Army
    Dead to Me
    Against Me
    Ignite

And the three bands I saw at my first show in Santa Cruz (vet's hall):

    Strung Out
    Lagwagon
    No Use for a Name

and too many more to list

Yah you gotta love any of these guys. If you the Subhumans/Citizen Fish, Culture Shock is also good. Dick sang for all three bands. Culture Shock was the earlies.

Flux of Pink Indians were also great.
OLD Chumbawamba is great peace punk. Like "Never Mind the Ballots," etc.
Antisect is also some great peace punk if your into the old 3-chord punk like Crass.

Christ on Parade "sounds of Nature" and "A mind is a terrible thing" are great.

Have to 2nd tons of the bands people mentioned: MDC, Minor Threat, Fugazi, etc.

Also 2nd the following that were brought up but maybe not the exact record:

    Accused: Most older are great
Suicidal Tendencies "Suicidal Tendencies" self titled is a classic for sure
GBH "Leather, Bristles, ...." is pretty alright
    7 Seconds "The Crew"
Agent Orange "Living in Darkness" is great surf punk ala Dick Dale as mentioned

The Dicks "Hate the Cops" is another great one.
