Obviously the latter. Golf courses, rice paddies in the desert, almond trees to name a few.

I'd be against pumping until all the ridiculous water use is ended.

Hey man, im an engineer. You put a problem in front of me im gonna want to find a solution. I'm not gonna first analyze if its a problem that ethically needs solving- Ethics are for after the solution has been found.

BIG picture here, but do you think that this could be a use for the freshwater melting off the glaciers/ice caps and desalinating oceans or causing other enviro harm? Capture and transport that fresh water for good use to mitigate some impacts of the melting?

Disagree. Ethics first. Excuses much later.

I'm an engineer, too, and I think engineering has a lot of blame in how things have unfolded with regard to water use. We're often so consumed by what can be done (building dams, irrigation, etc.) that we don't really think about what should be done. We're getting paid to design infrastructure, not to ponder ethics, after all.

Don't worry, altasnob will show up soon. Then we can have a nice, healthy, productive lawyers and engineers discussion about solving the water problems of the Western states.

In California, the current drought has finally brought attention to the fact that agriculture uses 80 percent of the state’s developed water. Some have questioned whether a sector that accounts for a mere 2 percent of California’s economy should be guzzling so much of its water, especially in this time of scarcity. But the real scandal, Beard makes clear—and the reason the agricultural sector can afford to use so much water—is that the price of its water is subsidized to an astonishing degree by the taxpayers of the United States....

Who else is gonna solve the West's water problems if not the degenerate lawyers and engineers of the region with the most water? Whose in for a Lot 4 summit to drunkenly discuss western water issues? Yeah, me neither haha

I know. Do you count as a Water Buffalo yet? Or are they dying out and being replaced by something new?

Oh I think both are needed, but you've gotta make sure other people's opinions and concerns are involved. Water in the west is something I'm curious about and cautious of. There's a lot of history involved.

that’s more aimed at preventing another Mulholland St Francis dam disaster, not preventing another Mulholland buying into the colonization of a desert. The ethics of the latter can be trickier than the former.
