    Mallory Skied

Not by me. I'm not that crazy, or for that matter confident on my edges. Today while riding the Aiguille du Midi tram. We spotted somone skiing the Mallory route. These pics are of poor quality due to being taken trough glass and plaexiglass of the tram

    A little wider angle

The blue spot marks the location

The red route and the picture are courtesy of www.philingle.com

how many times per season is that skied? enquiring minds want to know.

Yeah well people are mogulling up the thing this season. Last week there were around 10 tracks, now this dude today making the first tracks after the storm.

We ran into him coming from the Rond today - French local dude. People say he's done it three times this year, all solo.

Crazy bastards all over the shop here in Chamonix. (I love it.)

That is fricken insane. Riding the Midi tram and looking at that face and imagining that people ski that line was just mind blowing. I have no idea what the snow pack was like the bunch of times I was there compared to when it actually gets skied, but its totally mindblowing to this kid. Can't think of anything in the US that is remotely close to as mindblowing as this face, especially considering its lift serviced!?!?!? HUGE, steep, just slightly exposed. Well done...

Idris, Do you mean the blue spot marks where the tram was when you took the picture? Just curious.

    Euro Jong Here:

How steep, how long, does it go clean, or rappels?

3800m -> 2700m = 1100m just for the face, plus some change for the cruise back to the cablecar station. Depends on the route - I think around 50-55 degrees, sustained. Eugster has I think 2-3 rappels, Mallory maybe none - Idris can clarify.

The first 500m looks quite doable to me (excellent conditions right now), but then the Mallory gets into a couple hundred meters of side-slipping over some insane exposure and some nasty-looking rocky terrain to billy goat through. Eugster I've heard is appearently even steeper - you can't get a good view of it though so haven't checked it out.

I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones.

it has a sustained 50-55° pitch over 500 vertical meters with some passages a little steaper. there is one mandatory rappel of at least 25 m.

    according to amseln baud's guidebook.

edit: the rappel is right before you enter the last exit couloir (if I remember rightly)

The blue dot in my last picture is where the dude is standing. One roumour I heard(sp?) today is that the guy I saw today and Bbirtle met later is trying to solve the problem of how to ski it clean without rappels!

I wish I could go to Cham, but not to ski that shit. That's some serious exposure on the top pitch.
You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig.

So much cheaper than round trip airfare to Geneva. You spot me for the flight? I am short a few quid, I'll buy you a beer after we ski that little Mallory thing.

Come back over next season.... pillage the chicas and the Mallory!

edit: no fucking way I'm skiing that yet!

What time of day was this Tom? A guide friend saw some guys boarding (I think) it last Thursday at around 15:00. Sounds late to be there given the time of year and weather conditions last week.
