    Sopris TR w/pics

    EDIT: photos fixed

hit up Sopris this weekend... she's a big lady

we packed in on Saturday to Thomas Lakes... 4 miles, 1500 vert, 75lb packs, ugh. Then on Sunday morning started the skin and bootpack up the East ridge. We had our eye on the widest chute in this photo (2nd to lookers-left):

I guess it's one of the Laundry Chutes (?). The other 3 in the photo were pretty much unskiable due to the ginormous cornice on top (which is partially fractured and ready to let go), and also because of several stair-step icefalls in the middle. But if they fill in enough, I'd definitely like to check them out next season.

Snow was bomber due to fairly colder temps, and the morning sun was making that oh-so-nice soft layer on top. We were expecting to traverse across a rocky section in order to access the chute, but were pleasantly greeted with a nice steep ramp. So in we went. Here's me skiing the main chute, looking down the entrance ramp:

Here's a shot of my friend exiting, there was a small little icefall you had to leapfrog on the exit:

The chute was a nice steep but carvable pitch, snow was superb. We then traversed out high right so we could get back to our campsite and found this little fellow:

again, nice steep pitch but excellent snow

And then called it a day. I'll post some more pics later, but don't have them all downloaded.

Looks like a fun weekend. Those cornices are huuuuuge.

Mt. Zirkel sometime soon? Would be great to hookup for some spring touring.

I've looked at Sopris all my life, hiked it 8 or 9 times in summer and skiied four times, twice from the East summit and twice from the West. Never the "Laundry" Chutes, though. (They are actually named the Landry Chutes after Chris Landry who skiied them in the late seventies or early eighties). Sweet TR. BUMP this for springtime in the Elks!

Esp. like "Exhibit A. Why my dog doesn't come on ski tours anymore"
