Seems counter intuitive because it is a high flocculating yeast.

A "Milkshake" IPA, to me, is a NEIPA with some Lactose and a fair amount of wheat and/or oats. Sometimes some fruit. If that's what you are going for, then you might pull it off with that yeast, but it'll drop out early and mouthfeel and body will be lacking for "style". Also, it'll finish lower than you might want. A milkshake should be sweet right?

I'd shoot for any number of Conan or London Ale III clones out there. However, if that's all you have then go for it. Just do some water chemistry math too.

Yeah-I know you are right. I’ll save the 04 for a porter.

Vanilla beans are crazy expensive right now too. $5/each or so. I thought I would get some for both the IPA and a vanilla porter.

I tried a NEIPA with peaches but used Chico Yeast and it dropped out. Beer was still awesome, but within a few days it was mostly clear. YMMV

I bet I could get a good whirlpool going with the pump and an appropriate piece of tube.

Used the built in pump to recirculate and whirlpool. I use a hop strainer so for me the whirlpool is not critical. The unit has a false bottom so most of the floating material collects on that.

Its very easy to use and is a compact yet functional piece of brew equipment. The price is not bad as its next competitor is the Grainfather which is nearly twice the price. The immersion chiller could have a few more coils to help cool down the wort better. I have a Blichman plate chiller/pump combo so I will in future brews use that. The controller seemed to hold temp nicely and the heater elements get water up to temp in a reasonable amount of time. I am also using a T500 as my sparge water heater/holding tank, sparging was easy as filling a pitcher with water and pouring over the mash pipe after raising it to the sparge position.

All things considered I am giving the Robobrew an A. If anyone is looking for an all electric small foot print BINB style rig this is a lot of bang for the buck.

Finally got to taste my Gumball Machine and Magnificent Bastard brews being properly carb'd up. Both are spot on for taste and hop presence as I recall the originals tasting. The MB is smoother than Arrogant Bastard which is what I was shooting for.

Paired with a Scottypie it was very nice. Buddy even brought me a hopslam and a couple of other beers to taste.

All in all a good day!

So just curious, what do you feel qualifies it as "Milkshake"? I've discussed it with quite a few brewers and everyone seems to have different ideas of what it is. I've added lactose to a few, peaches to one, but never vanilla, or actual milk or almond milk etc (which some do). Interesting style, and when done well, tastes pretty damn good.

My grain bill includes plenty of flakes oats and it will get lactose, dextrose, and green apple purée at 15 left in the boil. Lots of dry hopping and vanilla beans during fermentation.

Sounds about right. What hops? Ant bittering hops at all or just whirlpool?

5 gallon batch. 1oz magnum at 60. 2oz citra at whirlpool, 2oz azacca and 2oz citra at 3 days into fermentation. Probably 5 days dry hopping.

    Over pitch of 1318 yeast.

Nice, we've usually under pitched and use "CO ALE" which is Conan clone. Used 1318 a lot too.

The overpitch is purely out of laziness- pitching onto a yeast cake from the previous Pale Ale.
