If he listens and comes back when called, why not, so long as there is no dangerous terrain around.

That is why I like dogs, more than most people.

That occurred to me. I think I'd still prefer to keep a light on him so he can wander and so he can't just disappear into the darkness.

Dogs can see really good at night. They make cheap clip-on lights for collars that we use when we are camping or night hiking with the dogs to keep track of them.

We also have some glowstick type lights that clip around their neck for campground antics, but they would probably get lost pretty quick in the woods.

Like snowaddict, I have a clip on light that I put on my pup's collar, and when walking her at night I have an LED collar that goes around her neck. These are more for me/cars to be able to see her since she's a black dog, but I've never noticed her having trouble navigating in the dark on her own. Lots of times when camping we'll call her back and she's a hundred yards into the woods and comes running back full speed.

My only concern about a headlamp would be interfering with the pup's night vision ability by putting a bright light in front of them. Does it have a red light setting? That could split the difference for $0 to try it out.

If it's a mellow trail, theres probably low risk for any of the options, so might as well give it a try.

Yeah, it has a red light setting. I'll try that, and/or maybe set the lamp on the back of his neck and point it up or behind him so there's some indirect illumination that won't blow out his night vision.

I do a red light on the back of the neck. They run like maniacs through all types of terrain so I assume they see ok.

The light is really for you, not for him.

We use the rave glow stick wrap around the neck for Maisie. She gives 'er and it doesn't seem to fall off.

Garmin collar has a pretty bright LED that you can turn on and off remotely. We use it all the time. Definitely overkill if you don't need or want to use a collar but nice if you do or just have it from previous dogs like we do.

Yeah. She’s 11 now so we have to protect her from herself. She’d run til she died if we let her.

Kasha is having the time of their life!

I need to go to Utah.
    Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....
