Anybody else get a chuckle out of how their elderly dogs can somehow muster up the power and speed of a puppy the second there's enough of a motivating factor? My old dog (half weim-half GSP) is probably on her last leg, poor thing. She's starting to go downhill and legs sometimes don't work in the morning. I think she's starting to get hip dysplasia. She's 12 I think and I'm TRYING to get her to slow her old ass down, but she still wants to fly down the stairs in the morning for breakfast or go bolting out the front door for a run like she's still 1.
Anyway, this AM, she's hobbling around and I let her out the backyard to do her morning business and she sees one of the neighborhood stray cats. Like a bullet, she goes straight into attack mode, making a glorious leap off the deck, and sprinting at warp speed toward the cat who is up and over the fence in a flash. Dog's still barking and going wild. Spinning in circles and doing hot laps around the yard. Then she comes back to the door, panting hard, eyes squinted with a very satisfied look on her face. That sure made her day. And it made mine. How a geriatric animal is able to do that is beyond me. Amazing. Haha.

Found a snapshot of the old family dog, Trixie in the garage circa 1974. Patience of a saint that dog, and loved hiking even if it kicked her overweight ass.
One of our dogs is the same age Trixie was when she passed, and the other a year older. I was determined not to let the new guys get obese, and have been pretty successful, although they’re terrible beggars.

It is true. Bridger had a second gear he'd engage even when he was having trouble walking. Did a rock skip creek crossing that would put any puppy to shame.
Our new dog, for lack of chickens to coral has decided to herd and obsess over our hoses. He can stare at the hoses for a long time waiting for something good to happen or run the length of it back and forth. Crazy dog.

So it's been about 10 months since we picked up our little Maisie, and 10 months since she's hung out with her sister Avie (who we picked up in Rossland at the same time we got Maisie). Too long between play dates for sure, however you know Covid...
Anyway it was pretty cool to see their interaction. Maisie is an absolute play demon who will play with any dog she meets (for about 15 minutes). With Avie she played relentlesly (as we did a 10km hike) for 2.5 hours straight. I think they definitely recognized each other. Avie's owner also thought she recognized me (we had Avie for about a week as we made out way home from Rossland) as she only barked at me for about 10 seconds, then smelled me and allowed me to pet her. Apparently this was not normal behavour for her. Like Maisie, she is very cautious around new people. Anyway, great to see these two hanging out and having a ball. Very similar builds on the two sisters (just a bit longer hair on Avie), and I haven't seen too many dogs thus far that can keep up to Maisie when she's in full run mode. Avie was right there.
Our Maisie is on the left

I wish there was a like button for this thread. Great dawgs.
