Doggie stoke
We have a little dog now -Baxter a 17 lb border terrier mix ( from shelter so not sure) We always had bigger dogs prior and I am a little dog convert.
Lighter, nimble but offset that they frequently have “little dog/ big dog syndrome” and also other dogs on the trail sometimes see them as prey so you have to be a bit aware of that bc they can get beat up easily too.
terriers are awesome but can be terrible. I recommend getting a puppy/ young dog if going terrier bc they are very hard to break any habits established. Like you think you are a great consistent dog owner but you will fail if boundaries are not established early
I’ve always liked the mini Aussie’s/ mix. Super good natured, they listen well and can go go go. Good trail buddiesskid luxury

It's gonna have to be more "other" in that mix than Yorkie if you want a dog that can go on long hikes and such. Former NFL offensive lineman lives near me and walks a Yorkie. Makes me crack up when I see them.
Maybe look at a mix that has Havanese. Our former Havanese could run and hike all day. Tough little guy without a terrier penchant for digging and tearing shit up."timberridge is terminally vapid" -- a fortune cookie in Yueyang

Terriers really enjoy costumes.
A buddy used to bring his Jack Russell on mtb rides. Dog had no trouble keeping up, and much better bike sense than the golden we used to ride with. Also, I can confirm that a scottie will sink, not swim, and if it does run, it will be in the opposite direction of your bike.

heard we were sharing terrier stoke. i love small dogs, but I agree with other comments that they can be stubborn as hell and somewhat hard to train. smart, loyal, and great hiking companions to boot.

Doggie stoke
Went on a bike ride with kids…. Some single track off a paved bike path. On the way home on the bike path passed some folk with a tiny little tri-color dog, not sure what it was. They saw us coming on our bikes and popped it up into their arms like a yo-yo with the leash. The dog didn’t seem any the worse for wear, though I didn’t see a harness. Nice feature, I guess…..?

Some Maisie photos back in June before knee surg.
Hiking up Maroon Mtn with her golden buddy Sitka and Viv.
In the sunpit at Shames mid may.
She is turning into the best dog we could have hoped for. Stays around the unfenced yard no prob. Bikes very well and mostly sticks right behind me on the downs. Still fine tuning keeping her by our side when people and dogs approach (she just wants to meet every dog and play) from above but for 9 months we aren't complaining.“I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different.”

For a dog that came into foster care pregnant and basically feral, she's doing really well. Here's a crappy cell phone video of Moira working off the zoomies and practicing recall on the long line. She's fast.
