my friends dog Buddy (RIP) one year got ahold of a thanksgiving turkey (one of three) that was out on a counter while everyone was out skiing. He pulled it down and ate on it for a while until one of the houseguests came back put it up on the counter and then locked buddy up and left again...

when everyone returned they made turkey sammys with the turkey he'd been eating on.

Norwegian Elkhounds are great!

Lena is nearly 14 years old and she has been my father's faithful mountain buddy for years. She is at her best in the snow -- not a dog for warm climates. Lena sheds like crazy but her personality makes her more than worth it!

These are my girls: AnnaBelle is our five y/o yellow lab and Marley is our crazy 8 y/o chocolate. People still ask if they are puppies at the dog park since they have so much endless energy! I need to get some pictures of them at the mountain onto the computer.

Thanks. Hopefully his ears will finally stand all the way up soon. The picture makes him look smaller than he really is, great danes are BIG.

This shows it better. My stepmom (pic modified b/c she'd want it that way) is 5'3. Simba weighs 130ish at last count, and isn't done growing.

Great Danes, Dobermans, and some other breeds that are often seen with pointy ears that perk up are not naturally born that way. As a newborn puppy, the ears are literally cropped into the pointy shape that most people are familiar with. The ears are held in place using tape and a variety of different stiffening media. My dad favors foam pipe insulation, and it does the job. The splints are necessary to allow the cartilage to stiffen and form to the shape. After a while, the ears will stand on their own. Simba's are getting there, as you can see in the first pic, but they start to droop after 24-48 hrs. His crop is abnormally long, as the breeder cropped them as she would crop those of a show dog.

Why did you choose to go that route? Showing purposes, or simple aesthetics?

It's really my Dad's dog more than it is mine. The whole litter was cropped, and the first time we saw the pups they had just been cropped. Simba comes from a line of champions, so the breeder had the litter cropped to show standards. By her own admission (she was standing over the vet supervising), it is a very long crop.

My dad was starting to get really pissed that 10 months had gone by and the ears weren't standing, and fleetingly contemplated having them shortened. In retrospect, it is a rather cruel process, but it was presented to us as the only option. My dad did TONS of research before getting simba, and concluded that the crop was ok. The ears finally are starting to look good, but it's an ordeal both for the dog and the owner, as the taping process takes a solid 40 mins every week or so. If he had to do it again, my dad would probably let the ears stay natural.

Simba is used to the tape, but he isn't thrilled to have it back on after having it off for 2 days. I guess it's a personal thing that every owner has to decide. I honestly don't know if I would do it on a dog that really was MY own.

Whatever the case, I think he's a FKNA cool-looking dog now. He's still growing, and his body is bigger than his sense of coordination, so he's hilarious to play with. Although he's pretty much the largest dog I've ever been around, he's the gentlest thing you could ever meet. He runs away from smaller dogs than him if hassled. Danes are great, I'd recommend them to anyone. I have two young sisters, 2 and 5, and he is totally cool around them. (Their toys are another story though. He's also chewed through a kitchen shelf lol.)
