There are much better bikes for off-road than the CRF250.

I have a Husky FE250 that destroys my old CRF250 in every way on trails.

^ you probably right, just the nearest Husky dealer is 400km away.

I have been dreaming about the KTM 350 excf as well.

probably keep dreaming for a bit longer and explore the world on my 95 xr250l for a while yet.

The CRF just has the advantage of being so damn Honda - I think Mrs. Hutz would take to it in a way that she might not the KTM or the Husky - it is just so easy and approachable.

Honda hasn't put effort into a XC bike since 2004. Think about that.

Go Yamaha if you want a bad ass Japanese trail bike. The WR250F is amazing!

Eh. Get a mx bike and convert it to trail or a ktm trail bike and avoid Honda. Most of the older trail bikes had no power and were built heavy and slow to tractor you anywhere.

If you want japanese I'd go with the kawasaki kdx200 or 220. Super reliable and have a decent amount of power but not too much pep that you'll be on your back. Just make sure it has the usd fork conversion and is in good condition

There's also the yz250fx and yz250x(2t) now. Yamaha's attempt to catch up to the Euro's in the off-road world. Lighter than the WR and redesigned as singletrack bikes. I've heard good things so far

In BC anyway you can’t convert an mx bike anymore. Well I suppose you could find an enduro frame and swap everything... but just thinking about doing that makes me tired.

Yeah, but not very often. Lots of fun but a serious pain in the ass to start.

cafe bars, rear sets. what a great track bike . Have you seen the new geometry if you wanna go crazy ? Like, replacing rear suspension with a mono shock ?
My first bike for street was a '76 RD 400. 2 stoke, solo seat, bassani pipe , cafe bars. The nuns loved me in catholic high school. Most kids had mopeds.
Braaaaaaap ! 100 low lead airplane fuel mixed 1 to 1 with 98 and golden spectro. Lots of blue smoke !

Fork seals, some new rubber, battery, and some carb work and you should be good to go.
