Fun fall ride over monte christo and down through Evanston to Morgan park. Wore my fat bike gloves and they worked great over the pass at 40F

Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?
So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

How did you like 690r? The local dealer has a 2018 that he’s willing to deal on- but I am torn between it and putting a down payment on the ‘20 790 adventure r-
Mostly logging roads a few quad trails but also commuting and a few highway tours-so would prefer relatively comfortable highway miles.
Currently have a 250 that I will keep for the rougher stuff.

I recently bought a 2017 690 R and I love it for logging / mining roads. It is also very capable on singletrack, just have the right rubber in case you encounter rocks or mud (I have separate wheelsets- one with Perelli M-21s and the other with Mitas-07s). The bike is also pretty decent on the highway, but avoid the interstate! The only downside to the 690 R is the mileage and the small gas tank. I just bought a one and a half (1.5) gallon Rotopax to mount on the tail in order to address this matter.

Maggot motorcycle stoke thread
Overall I really liked it, and had a wonderful time on it. As Viva said old gravel roads and two tracks were the most fun. I enjoyed it for commuting and running errands too. It did not excel at road miles, seat eventually got uncomfortable and the thumper vibration was noticeable. And the range for going to the middle of nowhere was disappointing, I am opting for another bike over aftermarket tanks. I barely got the best out of its capabilities on small and technical stuff. I don’t have a lot of experience there and would prefer to gain that experience with a lighter cheaper already beat up dirt bike.
Going forward I plan to try some other bikes out. I rode with a crew earlier this year who rode light dual sports with safari tanks, then had medium sized touring bikes like KTM 950s for road trips and gravel. The 690 can hang with either crowd, but at the compromise of not being fully committed to either category.
I am most tempted to look at the medium sized touring bikes as I enjoy old logging, ranch and mining roads the most. Also at 6-1 I found the 690 to be a little uncomfortable standing up without some modifications. I like the feel of those mid sized touring bikes with a tank you can lean into and bars an easy reach.
Then there is the fact it is European, and parts cost can be a bit ridiculous when replacing. The trade off is, it is wound up and exciting to ride.
So I would like to compare a KTM 790 to a Tenere 700. Or a KTM 1090 to an Africa Twin. And a Honda cfl450r to a 525exe. One or some of those will be my next motorcycle. Not opposed to trying and riding a lot of other bikes.

Thanks viva and Bruce- I am getting more and more focused on the little adv category. I tried the CRF450L. It was great but just a better version of my 250, not the long distance bike I am looking for. I tried the AT and thought it a bit much for my fishing trips down deactivated logging roads. The 790 seemed like the Goldilocks bike for my intended uses.

Several folks have made long-distance trips on the 790 (e.g., through Siberia, Mongolia, etc.), and have commented on that bikes capabilities and limitations. A lot of good reads there. Advrider.com
I considered the 790, but found it to be on the small side for me. The 1090 fits me better, but I don't think that I'd like such a heavy machine on dirt.Daniel Ortega eats here.

I think you are in the ball park at the 790. I have yet to ride one, but my impression is it the shit! I am torn on the KTMs at the moment. They are generally the best you can get, but are they the best value for me?
If you will spend whole days on the bike, mostly on roads going over 50 the 790 will probably be favorable. If you are mostly going to be on dirt and want to thrash about go 690.

Looks a lot worse on the POV. The view from the bottom looks like a slide down loose tallus. Still, no fun, at least the slide, the ride looked great.

So this came into my life. The local Harley Dealer is retiring - and this lonely old Honda could get 0 love from the Grampas of Anarchy crowd. So it got to the I just couldn’t say no price.
It’s a 2000 vfr800 with new tires and a new clutch.
Not sure if what use I’ll make of it. I’ll probably tear it apart this winter to see what is what - but so far it seems like a solid machine.
Plus it’s Scottish (or so the decals tell me) so it can’t be crap can it?

Just picked this up, 2017 Beta RR Race Edition
Been many years since I owned a dirt bike, looking forward to next year on the dirt, but first it is turning into a snow bike for this winter.

What size Beta is that? Gotta be big 4 stoke to be good snow bike. 450?

350. Reviews on it say it makes the same kind of power as the 450’s, but with higher revs required. We’ll see if how it manages as a snow bike, but I had no desire to ride a 450 in the summer.

I'm in the same boat. 350 is a nice happy medium. Depending on model it can be a torque machine.

Last ride of the season, perhaps. Forecast is for snow overnight.

The various 350 bikes out there are about the perfect off-road size for most riders. Having said that, my old KTM 450 EXC wasn’t a handful by any means. It just wasn’t as nice to ride as my newer KTM 300 XCW

Any Reno/Tahoe scooter riders looking for a great end of season- fall colors ride I got a decent one for ya, as of Friday. For roadies- 80-20-49 and back to town. 49 up the hill in mid to late afternoon is the prize, all fall color, waterfalls and twisties to the top of Yuba Pass. Sierra Valley before sunset is a showstopper. For us duallysport types- try the Henness Pass road from Jackson Meadows to Camptonville on the old immigrant road- then back up 49 on the same route. Plan around temps and take a camera, you won’t be sorry.
Watch out for PG&E maintenance rigs and fire trucks, they’re both out in droves right now.
About 200 miles from Truckee round trip. Chilly afternoons up high."if you plant ice, you're gonna harvest wind..."

350 EXC is probably the best all rounder in the KTM line. There is a reason it sells out even at its high price.
