My other ride is a 450 exc-f and I’m glad I got the 2t for a lighter option and have been able to keep it real with the rest of the gang on bike bikes.

I’ve been told however that for the 9 day Baja trip in the fall I need to bring the big bike, not negotiable.

Took a nice ride down the west side of the green toward horseshoe canyon. Monā dished some extreme sand storm conditions. Glad to make it out alive!

First self shuttle on the 300L. Stoked to get one more MTB ride with good temps in the desert. Back up in the 90's/100s now til fall.

Question for the 2 stroke enthusiasts: how do you know when it’s time to do the top end? I’ve got 2250 miles and about 110 hours on it. Can’t really tell that power is lacking or anything is awry but I’m a noob.

You can pull off the pipe and look at the piston and cylinder. If they are scored it's time.

110h of trail riding isn't much for a 300. If hot haven't spent much time at WOT you're prob good for another 100, at least. But you should take a look anyway, since it's so easy.

Or just wait for the engine to seize when you're doing 80, like I did once.

K thanks. I’ve certainly spent some time at WOT. I feel like I’ve ran it hard but who knows. I’m gonna milk it for a while on this trip until I get to a reasonably dust/wind free place, buy some parts, fire up some how-to vids and take it apart.

I'll be honest, I've never gone near that on my two strokes. I used to do pistons at 50 hours. They always looked good. I preferred that to replacing scored barrels.

I hit 2k miles on the new bike Ktm 300, xcw, including 1,000 in the last 14 days. Installed a 14t front sprocket last week and much better highway comfort with enough umph crawling over slick rock at low speeds. A welcome improvement.

Also put a 130 tusk d-sport tire on the rear which is much bigger than the stock 110 Dunlop. It’s all we had in stock for cheap. It seems to grip better in sand but is more lethargic overall. Next time will try 120 or maybe back to 110.

Got a 2gal gas bag plus the stock 2.1 and I’m good for 175ish miles. Gonna upgrade the tank to 3.n and then be able to range to 200 with the big bikes w the bag.

Got a few new minor injuries directly related to the bike. Sore knees and sore shoulder mostly due to my newfound excitement for wheelies and just the general two stroke “hold on for dear life” dynamics. Throttle control on these bikes is paramount. I damn near whiskey throttled myself into a canyon wall yesterday after getting fucked up by an IED. Had to pull over and check my head for a minute and let the pure fear of death abate.

Anywho, moto season is ramping up here in southern Utah. Cheers and holla if you find yourself down here.

Always cover the clutch on a two stroke. Start to loop out or whiskey throttle, pull the clutch. Those 300's are a blast. So much bottom end. I might go back to one of those (from my 350). Oh, and 2-strokes live on wheel spin. A 130 is a lot of tire for a two stroke.

Pretty normal in our group for the KTM 250/300 in trail riding scenarios to go 190hrs or so before changing the OEM piston. We then do it every 100 hours after.

Check your PV's, there should be a bit of unburnt oil in the PV when you do the top end.

Happy to show some mags around Taylor Park this summer once things melt out. Almost all difficult single track up there, though.

Took the new WR450F out in Gypsum this last weekend. That thing is a blast. Dusty out there already, but we found some mud. Nice being able to tractor up the steeps and never run out of power.

I've got a WR250R for sale if anyone is interested. Great bike.

Yeah I’ll definitely go back to a 110 asap on this bike. It’s been riding great, albeit a little sluggish with the 130.

Did an overnight bike pack in canyonlands a couple weeks ago and made it out of there at just over 200 miles on the odometer. It handled reasonably well loaded down with camp stuff and fuel.

I haven’t gotten on the 450 since I got the 300 last fall. Definitely interested to get back on the big bike for a bit and compare.

Yeah, top ends are cheap and easy, go for it! It's nice to inspect the piston, cylinder and other tidbits while you have it apart....vertical rod play is something to check. Flush/clean the PV zone, activate it for feel and whatnot. I do em between 100-150hrs and the piston has always looked nice and am stoked for that. I usually lug with pipe hits in the required zones, it's a 3Lazy00 Austrian varietal variation

I don’t really like forward controls, but lots of people do. My brother in law has a Big Dog and it’s fun to run it around town for like 20 minutes til I can’t take the riding position, lol.

FWIW I don’t love the laid out sport bike position either.

I put 15k miles on my Big Dog K9 chopper back in the day. Loved it, but wife would not ride on it. Sold it and bought a Harley road glide 10 years ago. It’s been a comfortable cruiser and just missed the chopper. So found one on a work trip and pulled the trigger. It’s lighter and faster. But for long rides I think the bagger will still win out. I think next one will be an adventure bike Bike quiver.

Yeah, it was a little overkill. 300 miles at least I planned on some longer rides around the desert and only got around to a few of the because life got in the way. It is pretty nice to never worry about running out, but honestly, I came closer to running out more with the huge tank because I rarely filled it up. Low fuel light comes on and you have 140 miles left to go. haha.

Definitely always a finger on the clutch and brake. Not sure about "living on wheelspin" though. We are always trying not to spin wheels and instead maintain traction.
