    Got a 2nd 23” oem front wheel, and a 21” from a similar-year XR250, and spokes from Buchanen’s in California, and laced the XL250 hub to the 21” rim so I could use real dirtbike tires. Got some cheap used dirt tires on craigslist, and studded them with stainless #8x1/2” hex head screws. Made some fender extensions out of polyethylene.
    It was kind of a battle getting everything built and wrestling with tires and getting the tires to hold air, getting that wheel straight and dished right. Rode in a little snow last night, it was neat!

    We started plowing a track on our lake last winter. It is crazy fun and makes up for not living near good snow.... well it helps some.

    Anyone have any recommendations on gear brands (jackets, in particular) that fit skinny people? Went to two different stores and everything I tried fits like a cardboard box, too short in arms and torso length, much too much volume in the chest and belly. I'm 5'9" 145lbs so not surprising that motorcycle shit isn't built for people with my build, but still. I'd love to find something with more of a Black Diamond, Arcteryx, Mammut, Rab, etc. type of cut.

    Also what is with adding 85 zippers and 30 pockets to jackets? I'll be mostly on pavement for now but hoping to start dicking around on easy dirt mountain roads and in the desert next summer, would love to buy one kit for everything, but seems like most apparel designed for that type of riding looks like a fishing jacket crossed with a safari outfit plus some extra zippers and straps for good measure. Does anyone make simple, technical motorcyle outerwear for varying weather conditions? I'd just wear my normal outdoor apparel if it had appropriate abrasion protection.

    Rev'it has a relatively Euro fit, but their technical stuff sure isn't short on pockets.

    Personally, I do find it quite functional, but it takes getting over the look. I'd also note that it's tough to find good stuff that's as versatile as good outdoors gear; at least in my experience, riding with goretex or similar stuff in warm weather is not fun, so you have to make compromises somewhere (eg zip out liners or a great quiver).

    Long time coming, congrats. My shit is 80's old and all leather, but for hot days I bust out some klim. Smart move, I've seriously fucked my body up on my motos. The best thing you can do is buy a good helmet. Like your bikes worth.

    FKNA, I'm psyched for you. I know you have the vocab for speed, so, this can get very fun. Shifters feel limiting at a point even, when you get in to the 2 wheel space it's a different realm.

    It's like strapping a pair of skins on some tele skis to ripping on a turbo 800 sled. It just is life magnified. And you fuck up, you die.

    Of course with that you would have to try real hard, but down the very short road you will travel, it becomes a daily imminent issue.

    And get some bashers for that thing, ditch the rear fender, tuck up your plate, strap on a flat kit, and ride the fuck out of it just like a mtb with a 200 mile range. Keep it light, and then move on to your next drug, which will be faster and lighter. Mark my words, and rubber side down.

    lol. My wife took the pictures. I talked with her for awhile before I bought it. We also talked for awhile today about protective gear. My helmets that I already own are far better than what 99% of motorcyclists wear. And I've watched a LOT of people, including my brother, ragdoll and slide on pavement at over 100mph and walk away in inexpensive karting gear, which is why I'm so disappointed in motorcycle apparel.

    Good news is I'm old enough I don't have a desire to go as fast as possible anymore. Been there, done that, at a level most people never will. I know two wheels are different, that's why I bought a 300. I want to wander around, enjoy the scenery, bump down the occasional backroad in the middle of nowhere. You might be right about the next ride being lighter and faster, I probably will end up with a dirt bike or at least a dual sport eventually. But I think this will get the job done for basic scooting around for now. I'm most scared of other people, and riding around my 'hood for 30min today confirmed why, looking forward to moving somewhere that the entire county population is the same as a 20 block radius of my house.

    You make it down to SWCO next summer, holler. Let's get out for a ride, you'll have plenty of time to enjoy the scenery while waiting for me to catch up.

    Try Dainese, the problem is it’s kinda hard to find something that will do everything. Start with just a piece you need NOW and then later you’ll know what you might want then and it probably won’t be what you bought at first.

    Simple is not the strongpoint for most moto clothing brands. I like the functionality of my Klim jacket but I do not think it is perfect. They make good adv stuff though.

    If you haven’t already go check out performance cycle. They have a decent selection. There’s also a new Revzilla shop apparently.

    Welcome! I'm also 5'9", and about 140# and have struggled to find well fitting moto gear for 15 years. The euro brands are usually better, but Klim in particular fits like a paper bag. (They know their audience, and it's not endurance athletes.)

    I agree than most of them have too many features, but you really do need the straps to keep armor in place, and without the zippers it will either be too warm or too cold. If you want a jacket to be versatile, it's going to have some shit like that.

    I finally found a jacket that I really like 2 years ago: Scorpion Yosemite. It has more pockets than I need, and the removable liners are as useless as all of the others, but it fits my long arms and skinny torso better than anything else I've tried.     For pants I use some dual sport ones that were made by a guy in Utah for a while. I bought 2 pair when he announced that the was closing up shop. They have huge vents on front and back so they work from 35-90F. The main thing is that your pants need to be really abrasion resistant. I use separate strap on kneepads that go into my (tall) boots, and strongly recommend that approach. If your pants are tight enough to keep the knee armor in place you'll look like a motogp racer. Decent looking pants with built in armor will just let it move away when you need it most.

    Oh, and good call on the little bike. It's more fun to really cane one of those than it is to always feel like you're holding a faster one back to avoid getting arrested.

    On the topic of gear, has anyone had experience with the pull over rain gear? Seems like adding that over summer gear is a good quiver option for three season riding, but I’ve seen mixed reviews on that stuff

    Sure. You either go cheap and get PVC level plastic or you spend a grand on a Klim jumpsuit. Not much different than ski gear.
