Found a KTM 690 Enduro on Craigslist in LA. Flew into LAX, Uber to the seller, then rode it back up 1 to SF. This was mid-June. I was working back to back 16hr shifts, and hadn't had time to hit the DMV. Early July, took trash down to the garage and the bike was gone. There are some details I'm leaving out, but looks like insurance will cover. Roller coaster ride, but good God, what a bike. Best I've ever ridden, and it's such a great bike for SF.

Watched 'Dust to Glory' and 'Dust 2 Glory' this weekend. Documentary on the Baja 1000.

Now I'm trying to figure out how to head down there next year and watch the race/ ride down to Cabo and stay for a week.

Probably rent a bike from a tour company. Anyone here done it?

I’ve had some bikes over the years (interceptor 500, FZR 600, Xl 650, SV 650S, V-Strom 650, Bandit 1200S) but have never owned a BMW. Thinking that I’ve gotten to the age where I should consider scratching that itch and picking one up for some Fall foliage riding around New England. I’ve got a couple options locally consisting of a 1982 R65 LS or a 1986 K75. Airhead or flying brick? What say you Maggot Beemerheads?

The airhead is a more legit OG beemer, never been a fan of the k bikes.
Honestly I'd skip the anemic r65 though and hold out for an older r90 or 100 or something like that.
    Bigger, better, cooler IMHO

Yeah, I didn’t know if an airhead is an order of magnitude easier to wrench on at home vs a K-bike… Im approaching this with a VW air cooled vs water cooled mindset cause that’s what I’m familiar with. I may have it completely wrong however. Figured some folks here will set me straight.

It depends on a lot of factors:
    - How will you use the bike?
    - what are your expectations for performance and reliability?
    - how comfortable are you wrenching/solving problems/figuring stuff out?
    - is there an old BMW specialist nearby if thing are out of your hands?
    - aesthetic/cool tastes? (70s vs 80s shapes and styles)

I will add I have a strong anecdotal hatred of the r65 as I blew a customer's engine up on a test ride after some minor tune up work decades ago. Ugh.

I really like this series where this guy rides bikes and reviews them, and he had an episode where he rides his dad’s old R80 GS around Vermont. Pretty fun.

Pleasant weather day rides and some 2-3day backroad tours around New England. I’m pretty handy mechanically and would enjoy the Pirsig connection of tuning and tinkering on an old simple bike, especially one with lots of info out there and enthusiastic owners groups. Performance can certainly take a backseat compared to a modern sportbike… I’m more interested in engaging backroad cruising. Maybe a ‘Ride a slow bike fast’ mentally. I really liked my SV650 and V-Storm… I’d be perfectly content with another but would like something less like an appliance and more classic. Hope that makes some sense. Thanks for the replies so far.

Maybe a 2009-2016 air cooled, fuel-injected Bonneville? Older if you’re into carbs. Thruxton if you’re more into cafe style.

    Mine, classic stylin’.

The oilheads are probably closer to what you're talking about, IMO, especially if your frame of reference is relatively modern Japanese bikes. I test rode a couple of airheads before buying my R1150GS, and my personal opinion was that the slightly newer stuff is better and still has character and more wrenchability then the 2006+ (ish) machines that use CANbus and require more computer-based stuff.

Speaking of which, if you don't mind a full fairing and are willing to put a little elbow grease in to get going, I've got a 2002 R1150RT in the garage that I haven't managed to use in the last few years. I think it probably needs a starter plus the usual fluids and tires for a bike that's been sitting, battery may or may not come back. PM me if you're interested.

While the RT is great for blasting over to Vermont or such, my personal preference definitely leans away from a full fairing. I like the full wind blast, and I ran my GS without a windshield at all. An R850R probably is right up the alley of what you're talking about, but they're a little harder to find.

Thanks but looking more on the Standard or Sport side… not needing a Touring bike, yet.

Copy that. I'd say an RxxxxR would be right up the alley you're looking at if you want to go BMW. The R65 could be fun, too, but I felt like the airheads ride more like a collection of parts going in mostly the same direction and the oilheads are just a little more refined and smooth. It's entirely possible that had a lot to do with the handful of bikes ridden, though, and they may not be accurately representing their model classes.

The GS is even better for New England in general but there tend to be a serious price penalty over comparable R and RTs

The flying bricks are, conversely, too refined for my taste.

Don't take my word for it, though, if you get a chance to do a test ride and make up your own mind.

Bringing it home on Thursday. 89K miles and $2 grand… Guy says he’s put on 20K miles in the last two years, it’s sorted but needs some cosmetics, and he would hop on tomorrow to ride cross country. What could go wrong?!
