If you're more into thrillers as opposed to blood and guts, two recent good ones (IMHO) are The Mothman Prophecies and The Others.
I think most of the best straight horror flicks came out of the 80's. Some of my faves:
Hellraiser 1 & 2 (by 3 they were stretching)
The Omen 1 & 2
Phantasm 1 & 2
Quick trivia question: Which one of the above-mentioned films had a piece of its audio show up in a Greg Stump flick?

More disturbing than scary, maybe, but House of 1000 Corpses is great. Devil's Rejects is good too.

The classics: Halloween, The Excorcist, The Omen. When Mike Myers sits up and pulls the knitting needle out of his eye I was SCREAMING at the Television when I saw it as a kid. "TURN AROUND!!!!"

Try look for the original Japanese versions of The Grudge, Ring etc, for a good mindfucking. The westernized remade versions seem somewhat diluted in comparison.

While the ending was incredibly cheesy, I thought "Signs" was pretty scary and utilized some classic filming techniques.

Not so much horror as action with a bit of horror throw in.
Dog Soldiers
Brotherhood of the Wolf
28 Days Later
Dawn of the Dead Remake
Shawn of the Dead (for a good chuckle)
Bubba Ho Tep (Bruce Campbell as Elvis? Hell yeah)
I agree with Devils Rejects - 70's ish horror.
You can't beat the classics -
The Omen (Damien, I do this for you. Holy snikeys that is freaky.)
Exorcist (Zoinks!)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (lo budget makes it spooky. And that chick can scream)
AlienCharlie, here comes the deuce. And when you speak of me, speak well.

I would also add "Wicker Man" to the list. I think it has been listed in other threads. Not scary, just overwhelming dread whichs keeps building and building. Also "Cronos" is a good, little know arty horror flick.
Edit - While I am at it, check out "Dagon" and "Ginger Snaps."Last edited by Stu Gotz; 04-13-2006 at 07:30 PM.

It took me awhile to remember these two, but they are worth mentioning:
The Blob (Steve McQueen...a/k/a "THE MAN")
The Birds (Suzanne Pleshette)“How does it feel to be the greatest guitarist in the world? I don’t know, go ask Rory Gallagher”. — Jimi Hendrix

Just watched Dawn of the Dead a couple nights ago and loved it. I liked how the movie was fast paced, but at the same time I think where did "it" come from and eventually what happened to the human race? And seriously get a friggin sword and go Braveheart of those bastids. And the 9mm is not a pussy round.
Evil Dead is classic. That movie scared the piss out of me when I first saw it. Bruce Campbell is the best B movie actor ever.
I would have to watch Brotherhood of the Wolf at least 10 times to understand everything but it was pretty sweet film.
Both the Mothman Prophecies and The Others scared the shit outta me.
I have 28 days later and The Exorcism of Emily Rose to watch.

-Wolf Creek
An Aussie film. I'm not telling remotely what it's about but it's recieved nods at sundance and is a great horror flick. Really fucking good.

God no.
Wolf Creek is just fucking horrible. Didn't even scare me just made me want to throw up. I shut it off half way through it.
Disgusting.
However 28 days later was by far one of the scariest best things I watched in a long time. Moved fast like Dawn of the Dead but what I liked better is that the will to live was rewarded to some degree. The lack of a ending pissed me off in Dawn.
And for the love of god I am buying my ass a big fucking sword. Cuz in both Dawn and 28 days it would have saved my ass.
