Drag Me To Hell was a really cool/fun horror flick. Plus it has a scene where this posessed guy throws up a whole kitten. Fuck yeah.

I just watched The Fourth Kind. not really scary in and of it's self, but FUCK owls and FUCK Nome, Alaska! That shit creeped me right the fuck out as it's supposedly "real". Like they say in the movie "draw your own conclusions" but FKNA, the thought of the POSSIBILITY that it's real is just too fucking freaky.

could've actually been a decent scary movie if the "actual footage" scenes weren't so obviously fake. i didn't even have to read on the internet (which i did afterwards) that it was fake. once you know the "actual footage" stuff is fake, it kinda takes the scare factor away.

I think what tips Martyrs over the edge is that what happens in the film can be conceived as happening in real life. The premise is pretty twisted and I immediately was reminded of that Austrian guy (Josef Fritzl) who chained his daughter inside a secret basement for 24 years. Ultimately, there's a profound reason to the madness which is often lacking or not all too convincing.

But for over the top gore and gut wrenching disturbing, I have to go with August Underground's Mordum. I have no problems watching any kind of horror/gore you can think of. L'Interieur, Martyrs, Guinea Pig etc were intense, but I could easily watch them again. Mordum? I'm not so sure I'd watch it again. It's just that intense and insane. If you ever wanted to have a glimpse into a serial killer's life Mordum will give you just that. It's the only movie to actually make me feel nauseous while watching it and it had nothing to do with the shaky cam.

Caught this over the weekend and didn't think it was all that. Perhaps this film has fallen victim to the internet hype train being labeled as the most disturbing and disgusting movie ever made (Salo still owns the crown here), but the homemade camera shaking technique made me more nauseous and annoyed than the actual filth portrayed. Add in the constant over-the-top screaming, yelling, and fucks thrown around, and much of the film's value was greatly lessened never mind the obvious laughing going on during a few scenes. I think if you stripped down the 80 minutes to less than 20, Mordum might have had a more lasting impact.

Just went back through all the posts and it doesn't look like anybody has mentioned Feed.

I have never seen it because the trailers kinda grossed me out (knowing full well that the art/motivation of a trailer is to usually make something crappy look intense and worthy).

Has anybody seen this flick? It's about a thin guy's obsession with REALLY obese women...looks disgusting.

this year's fest seems heavy on the Japanese splatter tip...which, along with the recent run of "torture" horror films got me thinking that the current crop of horror films have forgone chills and genuine thrills in favor of out gross-outing each other with tons of blood and guts. i've also felt that for the most part the current glut of horror films is too reliant on the old TCM blueprint (i.e. dysfunctional and homicidal family torturing folks), as well. but then that's just my humble rumblings.

still waiting for a really scary new horror flick, with some creative gore thrown in for good measure, to come down the pike and give me the serious willies...

Haven't looked too much into the calendar yet, but A Serbian Film has the most buzz in the genre this year and has already developed a cult following with only a few festival showings. I've also heard great things about Dale and Tucker vs. Evil.

Recently saw Martyrs and have to give it a thumbs up.

Takes the whole "torture horror" genre (i.e. Hostel, Saw, etc.) to another level.

If you like horror films that are gritty, intense, and have some strange philosophical underpinings, then this is worth a looksee. Easily one of the best films I've rented this year, if only because it still have me thinking about it.

Be warned, it's pretty brutal, but the story is involving and though provoking, which is usually something that's sorely lacking from most modern horror films.

i saw the crazies on halloween, produced by george romero. i thought it was pretty good, better than i was expecting. kind of a virus-outbreak-zombie-pre-apocalypse film. two thumbs up.

Saw Neighbor (2009) starring a very sexy yet incredibly sinister and psychotic America Olivo. While the script was terrible, the effects extremely low budget, and the acting would make any person consider a second career in Hollywood, it's worth a watch for her performance alone. I've seen a lot of fucked up shit before and don't think I cringed as much as I did last night.

Just caught "Insidious" from the writer/director tandem that did "Saw". I'm not big on haunted house films at all (in fact, hate would be a word to describe how I feel about them) but this had me engaged from start to finish. Classic 3-act piece with a solid payoff. 4/5.

Can someone explain zombie movies to me? I don't require an awe-inspiringly unique experience every time I watch a movie, but how many times can we see the same plot with moderately different special effects.

I don't know anything about Stake Land but if you want to know what happens, here you go, and if this isn't what happens, it will in the next zombie flick:

Young main character is robbed of his innocence and a life of normality due to some outbreak or affliction that turns 99% of the world into zombies. The zombies are one dimensional vapid creatures who only seek to kill the remaining 1%, ostensibly for food. The boy is lost but meets up with some other folks. There is a dude who is a hard ass who wants to teach him the ways of survival. The hard-ass probably tells the boy to beat it during the first meeting, but fate just seems to demand that they stay together. The boy wants to survive, become a bad-ass and accept his new reality but he has an internal struggle to find some hope and morality in this big mess. Oh yeah, he meets a chick and they try their hand at love, a pure and beautiful thing, in such a sad world. If there were no zombie apocalypse, he would never had had a chance with her, cause he is kinda a geek. They all travel around until they find a place that they can chill for awhile. The bad-ass dude they met originally, realizes that he doesnt need to be such a bad-ass all the time. The end.

That applies to about 90% of the mainstream movies out there. At least with the zombie movies, people get eaten; much more interesting than the romantic comedy generic plot, or the coming of age drama generic plot.

Title - Something with a Month or Season in it and maybe a play on words. Let's go with "Autumn in New York"

Autumn works in a coffee shop in Manhattan but has to commute from Williamsburg, where she lives with her old roommate from college, a perky fat chick that provides comedy relief and makes Autumn seem more attractive to the opposite sex. Stuck in the same rut, Autumn wants to start her own PR firm because, after all, she was a marketing major in college. After yet another night of poor tips, she decides to walk home rather than take the subway. [insert Coldplay music and walk over Brooklyn Bridge at night]. She goes home and creates a blog called autumninnewyork.com. Her content is tripe, but ever so inspiring to the uninspired. Some dude emails her a bunch and he seems crude. She doesn't like him but he is persistent and gets a laugh out of her. She is buying flowers at the market one day and runs into him. He finagles his way into a date. She blogs more. Yadda Yadda, they fall in love. She finds out she really wants to be a writer. The end.
