I read that. The worst part is what must have happened to that dog to make it so fearful. I can only imagine how much distress the dog must have been in alternately terrified of its caretaker and desperately trying to love her.

Bump. My folks sent Ellie across the bridge this evening. She was one of the last purina puppy chow test puppies from St. Louis. Kind of cool bit of history from Mom's hometown. Big black lab, dumb as a box of rocks, but would love without question. Brought you a present when you came in every time.
I've never seen my dad love a dog as much as he loved her. He's a wreck. I'm a wreck thinking about it because my lab was the reason he went and got a lab. Athena is even older than Ellie and I know her time is close.
Fuck.

I’ve been avoiding this thread.
My home, when I got home today, smelt normal. I thought my wife had fed the dog some canned tuna, which clued me in: he eats better than that, generally better than me, in fact. Currently I lie here below him as he sleeps fitful on his porch couch, the house stinking so bad from his puss-draining mouth that I feel nauseated.
This is what we do for our brothers. We care. We don’t give up. We try to feign strength.
There is more to this story. Lots more. He is not done yet, not if I have a say.
Second guessers or snipers need not comment. I have done well and right best I can up to here and I will continue to do so.
He’s just a dog. I am just his human.
Edit: I don’t really care if this fits the thread theme. Please do not try to console me. I am merely here howling for my old ailing little man. He’ll likey recover to supermutt status. This process is just visceral and I need to unload. So take that, ya maggots

Boxcars, Echo was just as lucky to have you as you were to have him. You were both blessed in this deal and my heart goes out to you for losing your buddy. Echo looked like a very good boy indeed.

Tears at you heart. Peace to you and your family.
In order to properly convert this thread to a polyasshat thread to more fully enrage the liberal left frequenting here...... (insert latest democratic blunder of your choice).

This was tough to read.
After Ziggy passed two years ago we waited to rescue another family friend.
When we adopted Gypsy we quickly found that she was aggressive and tried to work with it.
We ended up going to a canine behavior specialist and signed her up for confidence building and socialization classes. Amazing!!
The behaviorist told us that she wasn't really aggressive, but instead she lacked confidence and was being reactive.
The classes we took her to were really good. They had all the dogs in the class go through an agility course while other dogs were on other features. Their job was to focus on their task and not concern themselves with what the other dogs were doing.
We've had Gypsy for over a year now and she has been worth every minute and every $$ we have sunk into her.
Sometimes you have to let your bad self ski...
