I say if whoever dies trying to beat it, it's still JPs record.

This is already getting out of hand. Is surviving a pre-req for claiming the record still?

edit: blurred beat me to it.

This may have been covered already ....... but ...... at what distance do you hit terminal velocity? I am pretty sure they are nearing that point, once you get there the sky is the limit
"Is it necessary to disdain the affluent Escalade driver in the ski area parking lot just because he never threw caution to the wind and gave up work, meat, and let his hair grow in the surreal international sojourn of powder skiing and self-actualiztion?"

WELL OF COURSE, thats why I am me and you aren't

    That would be "Giggidy...Giggidy..."

My fears from that first thread are coming true. This will not end well - some records don't need to be broken.

terminal velocity happens instantly without friction. So gravity pulls down at 36ft per second. everything. a ten pound ball and a hundred pound ball fall at the same rate. 36ft per second, every second. Now size creates friction on the fall as the object comes in contact with the air. A person who is larger in size and mass would fall slower to begin with because of all the friction caused by falling through the air. Obviously a person with a parachute will fall even slower because of the aforementioned. What is terminal velocity? It is a theoretical # that changes due to so many factors. It is figured to be about 126 mph for a human. The actual MPH at 36ft/second is 146MPH. It's fast and you don't want to hit the flat ground going that fast.

Dude, that is an incorrect statement.

If the guy goes off a booter for instance, his velocity is actually negative in the down direction, which is the way you would measure terminal velocity. Then he'll pass through vel = 0 and continue to accelerate until he reaches terminal velocity, which he'll sustain until he hits the ground. If he's in a vacuum, like on the moon for instance, he'll just continue to accelerate until he hits the ground.

Go back to your basic equations of motion. It's all right there, derived from F=ma...

There is no Terminal Velocity in a frictionless environment... you would continue accelerating until you hit something (most likely the source of the gravitational force.) Terminal Velocity is where the friction of the air slowing you down cancels out the propulsive force of gravity. You fall at a steady rate of speed.

But...wait...how does the treadmill factor into this again?

If the treadmill adjusts to the speed you fall, will you ever hit terminal velocity?

    huh?

accelleration due to gravity is 9.81m/sec^2 which is roughly 32.2ft/sec^2.

and a velocity of 36FPS is actually around 24.5MPH.

you just flunked your physics lesson for the day.

you are correct about terminal velocity for a human in a freefall position to be around ~120mph.

So instead of attempting this sort of ski stunt at 10,000ft, wouldn't it be more feasible to try it at a lower elavation where the air is more plentiful? A coastal mountain range such as one in AK might be the place for one to break that new record....

What others have said. Put simply, "terminal velocity" doesn't mean that it's so fast you die. "Terminal," here, means final -- as fast as you can go given the environmental factors.

Also, for record-setting, what are the criteria for the landing -- survival? walking away? clearly not sticking the landing, since Pierre apparently did a perfect one-point.

From a little research, it seems that it takes about 9 to 10 seconds to reach terminal velocity in an arched skydiving position. That's a lot more than 300 feet of falling.

cmsummit, nice work. Thought everyone out of high school knew that
number. What kind of a record is falling 220+ft off a cliff and landing on your
head, I just don't get it. Might as well play Russian roulette.
