need Microsoft Excel ninja help - making a chart question

i'm making a chart in excel

x-axis (horizontal) is date by month

    y-axis (vertical) is % exposure

within each month there are 36 different sector categories that could have a % number for that month

some months there are 3 sectors with exposure, some months there are 12 sectors that have exposure

when i use the chart wizard, it puts all 36 different sectors into each month, so the chart is wayyyy big and doesn't focus on the relevent details

How do i get the chart to only show those categories that actually have a value for the month?

    grassy ass

Disclaimer: I am not an excel ninja.

Have you tried leaving the 0% data as blanks on the datasheet. I was messing around and it seems if the fields are blank, the chart wizard ignores them

Say you have all your original data in one sheet, then write a macro that reads the data and writes it to a new sheet, but it omits the sectors with no data. Since this macro can easily figure out the final size of your data set, it can also make the chart for you. How you do it depends a little bit on what kind of chart you want (bar, scatter...)
