Eurovelo 1 - Portugal reccs?

Mrs. P and I have our plane tickets and are planning on riding 1000 km from Porto to Faro along the coastal route, Eurovelo 1, for three weeks in May/June.&nbsp; Does anyone have any experience or recommendations what to see, where to stay, etc.? We will have our camping equipment, are Warmshowers members, and plan on staying in guest houses/hotels/etc. when we want.</p>

How close to the coast are you staying?

Batalha/Alcobaça >> must see IMO, amazing architecture and history. Even worth going out to Tomar for the knights templar castle too
Fatima >> the main Catholic pilgrimage site in Portugal
Nazare >> big wave surfing destination, cool coastal town
Aveiro and Coimbra are also must visits. Depends on how close to the coast you are.

are there many camp grounds in portugal, do they camp, I ask cuz I've bike camped the camino in spain and on another trip thru south of France, so in comparison there were camp grounds in every town in France not so much in spain the spanish did not look like big campers, so even with tent and bags we just stayed in pilgrim accomadations of which there were lots, IME I wouldn't bother with camp gear in Spain

Quote sucks so here are some answers:

tgapp - The route hugs the coast for most of the way except when it needs to go a few miles inland due to a bay/lagoon/river that doesn't have a bridge or ferry.

XXX - on the map there appears to be many campgrounds both private and municipal, particularly once we get south of Lisbon as much of the coast is Parque Natural.

OK good then ^^ so I ask cuz I was very suprised how FEW campgrounds there were in Spain along the Camino in fact would say anyone wanting TO bike the Camino which was a good trip leave the campgear at home and just pack some gear in rear panniers

Not too much to add because my time in Portugal is mostly inland aside from time in Porto / Lisbon / Esposende / Barcelos.

Nazare is cool, but much cooler after watching "100 Foot Wave" which is about how it became a big-wave destination. Fun to see it in person after watching the documentary.
Porto - Pretty touristy, but it was cool to see the Port houses along the Duro - especially because I had been up the river and in the growing region during my ride.
Lisbon - Again, touristy, but the outdoor dining along R. de Sao Nicolau had a cool laid-back vibe.
Villamoura - Looks like you're just inland of the cliffs / beaches at Praia da Falesia / Shark Fin Point / Praia do Poco Velho. May be worth a quick jaunt. Riding along these was the last hour of my 7 day crossing of Portugal - so they're deeply ingrained in my mind.

More than anything, Portugal is a super-cool country. I'm beyond impressed with the varied landscape, the people, the value, the food, etc. It's going to be awesome.

We have read enough on Sintra to know to alter our route slightly to go through there. I found a warmshowers host listed there so we may even have a place to stay.

I did a motoring trip in the east and north of portugal up to spain , I said fuck the economy car give me the BMW so i can pretend I am a lawyer








I really liked portugal the people seem more chill than spain, a spainish cop looks like he will fuck you up while the portugese cop is just standing there really chill






I developed a powerful lust for Bacahal when I was there so check it out, the need to preserve fish by salting it is long past but salted Cod a traditional recipe

I should mention some locals in an air bNb turned us on to moovit and wayzee, with wayzee we made it to the Duro for a river cruise which I don&#39;t think we could have navigated without an app cuz of so many freeway zigs and zags and Mooveit was good for even finding funky little walking paths one couldn&#39;t see until they were 20 ft away





My GF met up in with her book club to stay in an airbNb that specialized in books and gin while i flew I off solo to Barcelona

I haven't cycled there but I think Sintra will be worth the trip. Just riding through that area would be extremely cool - there are actually some mtb trails in the hills and I saw a cyclist or two on the roads.
