Murder suspect arrested in California; Linked to Border Patrol shooter in Vermont
By Michael Donoghue
Vermont News First
A man planning to marry the Washington State woman who has been charged in connection with a fatal shootout that claimed the life of a U.S. Border Patrol Agent in Vermont last week, is now behind bars on a homicide charge in California, according to news accounts.
Maximilian Snyder, 22, had been part of a manhunt in Vermont this month, according to law enforcement sources, but by Friday he was in California where he was arrested on a charge of murder in the Jan. 17 death of an 82-year-old landlord, records show.
Snyder, who is from the Seattle area, and Teresa Youngblut, 21, secured a marriage license last November 2024 in King County in Washington State, The Seattle Times has reported. It was unclear if any wedding took place. The license was obtained six months after Youngblut became estranged from her parents.
Youngblut is jailed in South Burlington on two federal felony assault charges stemming from the shootout on Interstate 91 in Coventry on Jan. 20. She appeared in U.S. District Court in Burlington on Monday afternoon for a brief initial hearing. A detention motion was delayed until Thursday morning by Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Doyle.
Youngblut is charged in U.S. District Court in a criminal complaint with two felony counts: The intentional use of a deadly weapon while forcibly assaulting a federal law enforcement while in the performance of his official duties. The second felony charge is for discharging a firearm during an assault with deadly weapon, records show.
She is both a serious danger to the community and a risk to flee, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Michael P. Drescher. Doyle noted Youngblut could be detained under the law because her charges involve claims of violence. The defense says it plans to contest detention.
Snyder is due for a hearing on his murder charge Tuesday afternoon in Solano County Superior Court, according to California records. He is being held without bail by the Solano County Sheriff's Department. Jail records say he is 5-foot-8-inches and 140 pounds.
Snyder and Youngblut had both attended the swanky, private Lakeside School in Seattle and were interested in computer science.
Snyder's name had been privately mentioned by law enforcement in Vermont last week, but Vermont News First could not verify his direct involvement in the shootout in Orleans County and opted not to print his name.
He was believed to be associated with the other two suspects when they were staying at two motels in the Northeast Kingdom.
Vermont News First did report on Monday that Youngblut appeared to be linked to an unnamed suspect in three other out-of-state homicides, including one in California. It was based on federal court records in Burlington.
Youngblut was wounded and her companion Felix Bauckholt, a German national, was shot dead during the shootout with the U.S. Border Patrol on I-91 in Coventry about 3:15 p.m. Jan. 20. Youngblut reportedly fired without warning during the traffic stop about 9 miles south of the U.S.-Canada border.
Border Patrol Agent David "Chris" Maland, 44, of Newport, who made the initial traffic stop, was wounded in the neck and was rushed to North Country Hospital in Newport where he was pronounced dead about 4 p.m. Two other Border Patrol Agents arrived just before the shooting began and at least one returned fire.
A federal prosecutor in Vermont wrote that the individual who bought the firearms that Youngblut and Buckholts possessed on Jan. 20 "is a person of interest in a dual homicide investigation in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Bauckholt flew into the United States in the hours preceding that Pennsylvania homicide."
Both Youngblut and the unnamed person who bought the two firearms in Vermont that the Youngblut and her companion possessed on Jan. 20 "are acquainted with and have been in frequent contact with an individual who was detained by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania during that homicide investigation," Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew J. Lasher wrote.
"That individual is also a person of interest in a homicide investigation in Vallejo, California" Lasher said in a 5-page motion seeking Youngblut's detention.
The Seattle Times reported both graduated from the Lakeside School: Snyder in 2020 and Youngblut in 2022. Snyder went on to Oxford where he studied computer science and philosophy, the Times said. Youngblut had attended the University of Washington.
Lakeside has about 876 middle and high school students and boasts a 100 percent graduate rate going onto four-year colleges, its website notes. Tuition is $44,730 a year at the co-ed day school for grades 5-12.
Snyder is facing a charge of killing Curtis Lind, 82, who was stabbed to death outside his Vallejo home on Jan. 17, according to Open Vallejo, a local news site in the Bay Area.
Open Vallejo reported Lind also had been stabbed in 2022 and was due to testify against his reported attackers at a trial in April. Lind was impaled in the chest with a Samurai sword and also lost his right eye in the attack, news accounts show. His attackers were tenants that were in a beef about not paying rent owed to him, records show.
The Seattle Times reported in recent days that Youngblut and her parents became estranged last May. The parents reported to Seattle Police that they believed she had fallen into a controlling relationship and had been directed to move out of the home. Police said they could do nothing because she was an adult.
Yet her parents, Eric and Carla Youngblut, sat in the second row at the federal courthouse in Burlington on Monday. They were joined by an unidentified older gentleman and a second younger man in a suit. The foursome declined to speak to reporters.
When the court hearing ended, Carla Youngblut attempted to make hand signals to her daughter, but she had no reaction as she swung around to look at the gallery from the defense table.
Vermont News First had received messages in recent days from readers sharing social media posts that had raised questions about linking the suspects in the Vermont shooting to a radical fringe group known as "Zizians." They weaponize and have a never surrender attitude, which makes them resist, even with violence, according to the posts.
Lasher seemed to hint at that conduct in his motion seeking Youngblut's detention pending trial. "An originally peaceful interaction between the United States Border Patrol and the occupants of a vehicle became confrontational based on the defendant’s conduct, and she then unnecessarily and inexplicably escalated to deadly violence," he wrote.
The Vermont court hearing was continued for three days because authorities said they needed to further investigate Youngblut's background and review the evidence collected. The seized evidence included a journal by Youngblut that mentions her apparent use of hallucinogenic drugs.
Youngblut's journal had phrases that included "coming up on acid, and "not really sure what to spend this trip on." It also said, "This lsd trip seems pretty mellow" and "i fell kinda high vibrationy maybe more so than other lsd trips?"
Authorities also are likely to want to go through all the cellphones and other electronic devices that were seized as evidence.
Youngblut's association with other individuals suspected of violent acts also warrants caution before a decision is made about her possible release, Lasher wrote in his detention motion.
"The defendant’s possession and use of a firearm, combined with her itinerancy and associations, suggests she poses a current and substantial danger to the community that could not be addressed by a condition or a combination of conditions of pretrial release," Lasher said.
Based on the serial numbers on the two firearms used by the suspects, they were reportedly purchased by an Orleans resident from a federal licensed gun dealer in Mount Tabor, abut 20 miles south of Rutland in February, Lasher wrote.
The gun buyer from Orleans was not identified in court papers. Newport and Mount Tabor are about 150 miles apart.

Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to your body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much: I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those deskbound people with their hearts in a safe deposit box and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators. I promise you this: you will outlive the bastards." – Edward Abbey
