The Great Chartreuse Shortage - a long national nightmare
In case you haven’t heard, it is nearly impossible to get your hands on a bottle of chartreuse right now if you aren’t a bar. The lovely Mrs EWG is a huge chartreuse fan, and this two year shortage has her at the end of her rope.
Local place got two cases a month also and sold out immediately. $77 per bottle. Highway robbery. Will Aviations survive?
We might need to go over the pond and get some monks of their asses to make some product. Who’s in?
Also, anybody have a source? I could be a Christmas hero…

Sent you a pm. But yeah, the struggle is real. Monks have capped production (cuz Jesus) and prioritized their domestic market which has decreased the amount that is being sent to the US. Bars and restaurants get the lion's share of that which doesn't leave enough to satisfy the retail demand. Based on everything I've heard, it's unlikely to get a whole lot better in the near term.
I had a bijou last night made with citadelle and carpano antica. It did not suck.Brandine: Now Cletus, if I catch you with pig lipstick on your collar one more time you ain't gonna be allowed to sleep in the barn no more!
Cletus: Duly noted.

A horror story in 5 words: No Chartreuse, monks don't care. Given that my go-to cocktail is a naked and famous this is a serious issue. If you ever want to make friends (or enemies) on a chairlift pull out a flask of green chartreuse and see who takes you up on it.
Leon and Sons in Brooklyn seems to have stock on a regular basis and ships to most states. I grabbed a half case of mixed green and yellow a month ago when they had inventory, bundle together with some friends and you get free shipping over a certain dollar amount. Looks like they have green now but no yellow.Three fundamentals of every extreme skier, total disregard for personal saftey, amphetamines, and lots and lots of malt liquor......-jack handy

I’ve been checking the local stores since just after COVID with no luck. I’ve pretty much given up.

Did the Germans bomb Pearl Harbor? Do powder skirts matter? Was it Rob Story's fault?
Well, of course she does (in fact, she actually has a printed menu of house cocktails - very fancy) but as you may have been insinuating, I misspoke (typed?) when I said she needed it for Aviations. That is, in fact, made with Luxardo and Violette, of which there is no shortage. I feel like a heel.
It's her Lumiere that is suffering. Her personal recipe: 1.5 oz gin, 1 oz St. Germain, 3/4 oz green Chartreuse, 3/4 oz fresh lime juice, dash of orange bitters.
Don't fucking tell her I told you the recipe. And yes, there is a second menu that tells the kitchen staff how to make it. Kitchen staff = me, of course. But it's been 86'd at Cafe EWG for some time now, unfortuantely.

An Aviation is my go-to fancy pants drink which is the only reason I knew to ask. The Lumiere sounds good. Good luck in the search.

Not that Chartreuse is really my thing (I did have a "flight" experience at Le Coin recently which specializes in the stuff https://lecoinseattle.com/) but you could try to make your own https://www.instructables.com/How-to...rtreuse-Clone/ . That guys seems pretty committed to the process. You could probably skip steps 1 and 2 and just buy a bunch of Apple Brandy in bulk, though that would definitely get expensive quickly.

Completely different breeds. Chartreuse is way stronger (55% ABV I think) and tastes like a bunch of the 100+ plants it's made with. Genepi is 40% ABV and tastes like sugar instead of the 1 plant it's made with.
I'm going home sometime in late winter/early spring, place your orders and I can bring some back (minus the tax of 2 bottles Ms Boissal will apply on whatever makes it back)."Your wife being mad is temporary, but pow turns do not get unmade" - mallwalker the wise

You mean those Chartreusian monks have something better to do now? Thats a sacrilege. That recipe has been secretly guarded and passed down for several hundred years and many wars that displaced the monks.

In my territory, the shortage seems to be over but it is still $80 a bottle. I don’t sell it anymore but I did for a long time. It’s always interesting when something I used to have to beg a retailer to carry catches on and becomes a big deal. I saw it happen with Chartruese, Pappy, Tito’s, Fireball, the Japanese whiskies… probably other brands I can’t think of. I remember tasting the VEP at a meeting once and it made me gag. One of my co-workers would swear up and down it would cure anything. Now I keep a 200 ml of chartreuse vegetal around at all times. Whenever somebody in the house is starting to feel a cold coming on, we pull it out. My wife mixes a little in some warm water or tea. I usually just take a shot. I don’t know if it works for real but it makes me feel better.

Here in UT. it is available, and it costs $65. OTOH, I have been looking for an amaro from Bologna called Montenegro, and can't find it in the state. It's my favorite, other than Averna

Fuckkk
VEP. With a cork. The real deal. That’s gotten expensive.
Nothing at all like screw cap chartreuse.
Not for mixing. A small dram in a snifter glass and savor the flavor.

This was a great tip. Apparently the website/app is messed up and while it says several stores in SLC have it, no one does ... but delivery coming in shortly and part of our crew is teed up to grab some.
If this works it'll be a Merry Xmas indeed. Cruiser, thanks for the heads up. If we get shut out I might have to make the drive south...
