Good news (so far): at least Banffanadians are about as friendly as ever.

Bad news: Canadian news is no longer the respite of calm matter-of-fact reporting that used to make our overblown silliness seem temporary. And it kinda sucks to come to Canada and know the Albertans' terrible parking and driving get a pass now that there are American things to worry about.

But good news: we needed some humility anyway.
It's what the American government wants. Domination of the news cycle. You win.. I guess?

Lots of American plates in Whistler. Even on Teslas the vehicles aren't getting vandalized or messed with.

While we are negotiating land swaps, Oregon should, for the cost of the infrastructure, cede everything east of the Deschutes river (and a line extending south of that) to Idaho. All of those counties are welfare queens anyway.

I thought Idaho was going to take eastern Oregon by paramilitary occupation, then give up Boise because it's full of Californians anyway

I really enjoyed the calm takes on our nonsense in years past, but it does look like there are a few talking heads up here that might enjoy the trolls' drama and maybe a nightly gig.

Hopefully you all learn from our mistakes. The only real currency on border issues is ratings. You'd probably get further sending down Dan Levy and Catherine O'Hara with a mandate to bring back the creamy enchiladas. Or hire JT some comedy writers.

Just got back from VT for what sadly might the last time in 4-5 years, or maybe ever depending on how things go. Americans I spoke with are all pretty pissed about what's happening, and think this Canada talk is stupid. I'm wondering though, what are they going to actually do about it?

Fewest cars I've ever seen at the border - 0 cars going to the USA, maybe 12 coming in to Canada. Not one single other Canadian plate in the VT parking lots. Maybe it's the weak dollar, maybe it's the political vitriol. Maybe both.

    In this thread:
Canada becoming 51st state - so insulting. No thanks.
Canada becoming 51-63rd state, getting a bunch of senators, and fixing the USA via elections - also fucking insulting. Fix your own damn country.
Canadians supposedly messing with cars with USA plates on them - I seriously doubt it. Again the USA "I am so important" flex coming in to play. Nobody cares about you.

Saturday's hockey game gonna be lit at least.

Hey Paulster, sincere thank you for visiting my state.

I like visiting Canada. I'm in need of a grocery store run for some things i just can't get here. My kid is living back in the US for now, so I don't have that excuse for a visit.

As far as what are we going to do about it? Time will tell. Please try to be patient with us. I know it's challenging at times. The assholes have captured enough state governments and representatives and senators to make it really difficult for the rest of us.

There’s a lot of rural folks in BC and Yukon that skew very right, or perhaps true libertarian as they don’t rely on most social services. They value any govt that would just leave them alone. Not sure they care to even vote, at least many of the one’s I’ve run into. Bet most haven’t even heard the latest bullshit happening in the Whitehouse, and those that have find it more comical than anything. Us ‘civilized’ folk getting our comeuppance, or at least the cycle is turning as it always has. I’m envious of them at the moment

I didnt relaize it until COVID but yeah hy 16 is a bible belt

my ski / bike MD bud told me they send in one and if they were Covid positive the whole bunch had it, and there was massive convoy in town,

this town might go Conservative next federal election altho taylor bacarach has a huge FN backing

Rustad is from Vanderhoof , the guy is a fucking idiot and we dodged a bullet on that election

Looking forward to the game tomorrow. Gotta think both teams are going to skate like it’s the Olympic finals.

I despise the tkachuks. Trash on skates. It’s like having Marchand brothers.

The time for the charm offensive is over. Did the premiers meet with the head gardener too? Stop talking about ally and friendship, its demeaning and bootlicking. The talking point of the US administration is Canada bad and unfair. Their Sec of State stated we are neighbours nothing else , unfair neighbours but you can't change who you live beside unless you buy their house.Go to the American people and ask for a divorce in adult terms that even a Trump voter can understand. Propose that after a 5 year transition there will be no cross border trade in the auto industry. Canadians will buy cars produced in Canada only. The shipment of oil will be reduced to 1- 1.5 mil BPD. The other exports to the US will be reduced by 40% and imports from US will be reduced by same. Trump said he wants an economic deal , Canada should make the first move and see if that flies. You can't be unfair to someone you barely trade with anymore.

Today’s admin in the states might listen/respond favorably to a good “fuck off” from the Canadian government. I’m not sure JT has it in his personality to pull it off, but maybe someone else?

The guy from Denmark pulled it off pretty well.

Depending what you mean by vibes? Ok my proposal is to get out in front on US messaging. It solves the problem of "unfair" to a proportion of American people. It may create a pushback in corp America but the hanging threat of tariffs is causing real harm to the Canadian econ as no investment is being made in Canada. As Canada has no idea what would be a good economic deal for Trump, put out a proposal that fulfills his stated objectives. I do want to end the stating of friend , ally all that shit. We are just unfortunate neighbours who cannot change geography , not the people but the state and administration.

I'm all for putting Trump off this tariff nonsense. It seems like broadly speaking there are three ways to look at it:

One, Trump is not going to stop until countries call his bluff and stands up to his bullying. Calling his bluff puts a stop to harmful tariffs. That's why Canada and others are retaliating now.

Two, it's a ruse masquerading as populist policy to help American workers but really it's about tax cuts for the wealthy by using tariffs to raise taxes on the middle and working class.

Three, he thinks "tariffs" are beautiful. Trump believes he is on a mission to save America. His plan is to shock American trading partners into submission. So unfortunately, as long as U.S. markets remain calm he's going to keep at it no matter what Canada or Europe or BRICS does. And in fact, opposing what he wants—which I think is appreciating foreign currency along with buying more weapons—gets you in the crosshairs instead of riding it out.

Choose your strategy carefully. Throwing caution to the wind could wreck the entire system. Maybe the best answer is to wait three months before making a huge strategic wager

Calling his bluff may be the way to go for sure.Tough to tell though. He could very well go full Putin - why are those guys we are threatening threatening us back. Those very bad people won't let us take over peacefully, why do they hate peace?Just like the Russians, the American people aren't going to stand up to him. Well maybe not until gas prices go up. They seem to really hate that.I am fully on board with a complete embargo.Any reason we can't join OPEC?

Well the charm offensive isn't working like it kinda worked last time. The market reaction worked probably way more retaliation tariffs as smart people know what it would do to the auto industry. For American people maybe the pain has to be real? But the Canadian econ cannot take this sword over its head for years. So my proposal while its not desirable for anybody its really not that inflammatory to his base as it says we just need time in order to have a orderly divorce in order to be "fair". Maybe the response will be " no we really don't want to see other people we just wanted X and Y" whatever that is. Problem Canada has no idea what the deal is that will make this go away. Does the US want to deindustrialize Canada? at one end of spectrum to just a better deal on NAFTA like end of supply management while still having high tariffs on softwood - the US only wins on every issue. Maybe free trade with Canada is dead. And that is a new reality.

If this was the plan was Canada Mexico picked first as they are the most vulnerable so an easy win thinking if they can do that to Canada think what they can do to us.
