My city sits in a dense forest full of 100 year old hardwoods and pines with a (thankfully) very aggressive arborist and tree-retention mindset which I love. Problem is, every single person here has lawn crews going 365 and the songbirds of fall are nothing but 2-stroke backpack leaf blowers sounding off all at once when they're allowed to at 8am.

I grind them up with the last mow of the season. Any after that will get covered up in snow.

When I was a kid diving into the leaf pile was fun. Then my dad burned them. Seems quaint. No leaf piles in that neighborhood now--all the elms are gone.

When I lived in Michigan our city's policy was that everyone raked their leaves to the street and then burned them. I used to love riding the bmx bike around the neighborhood with my buddies on a cold fall day with that smell in the air.

When I used to do my own lawncare I'd just hit the lawn with the mower with the bag on. Worked better than any leaf blower and made dumping the shredded bits in the compost heap really easy. Leaving leaves on a zoysia lawn lead to dead spots come spring if I left them.

Depends on the tree species. Oaks are pretty acidic and unless your garden needs acid, not something I would do. Maples are cool though. Ash also ok if yours aren't all dead from the beetle.

Yeah, I grew up in Detroit. Haven't been back to the old neighborhood (Bagley Elementary) since I showed my new wife around 40 years ago, but it's sad to look on Streetview with all the trees gone. It was the classic cathedral arching over the street.

Leaves are a trivial problem compared to pine needles. We have a half dozen Ponderosas that produce about a 1000 gallons of needles every year. Leaving them is not an option, as our Pres-elect says, they need to be raked. And don't get me started on the cones--stepping on a Lego brick is nothing compared to stepping on a Ponderosa scale barefoot. (Ponderosa starts with P for prickly.) My wife has seriously considered cutting down a tree or two to get reduce the needles but I talked her out of it.

I will slop some fuel stabilizer in the tank and do this ^^ with any leaves the gardener misses but she did a pretty good job this year

Massive maple in the front that sends leaves throughout the block. I blow my yard plus sidewalk, parking strip, and road thru my neighbors to the left and right. Two sessions on it and 12 bags so far this year. Probably another 2-3 bags on one final session once we get an overnight freeze and the remaining drop. Standard City of Seattle 40x120 lot, so nowhere to stash and mulch. Last round of bags were water logged and heavy as fuck so I left some Halloween candy and seltzer out for the Recology boys.

The joys of an tiny urban lot, I'm in the same boat. We fill up our yard waste bin every week; it will take until January to get rid of all the leaves

Small lot and I just mulch the leaves into the yard. I use a rake to spread them out evenly and then a few passes of the mower lowering the blade each time. Works even if I’ve got six inches of leaves on top. Neighborhood is all built on sand so it really helps our soil. I do reduce the number of leaves by cutting the yard short right before the leaves drop. That way the wind blows most of them off the yard and into the neighbors.

Today is Doug fir cone day.

My trees are shedding them at a rate I've never seen before.

Sounds like there's a roofing crew nailing down shingle on my roof. One hit the dog on his head while he was taking a piss in the front yard this morning.

Maples have almost completely shed their leaves and the cedar fronds are done.

Leaf blower is going get a work out this weekend.

Why did I buy a house on a big lot in the foothills rain forest with such a long driveway?
