There were(are?) definitely some 35 zones, but 25 seemed dangerous in big snow years.

It's 35 at the east end, 25 at the west. I've seen signs in Soda Springs asking people to slow down and people in Soda Springs screaming at people to slow down. It doesn't seem to do any more good than the 35MPH speed limit along Donner Lake. (Truckee made a feeble effort at speeding control with a motorcycle cop out at Donner Lake a few times over the summer.) The limit at Soda Springs may have been higher at one time and it's nice that the locals were able to get it lowered. Usually to get a speed limit lowered, at least on a state road, is to do a speed survey showing that most people are driving slower than the posted limit--at least that's the argument Truckee uses. Which seems bass ackwards--if people are already driving slower why bother to lower the limti. I believe that's catch 25.

I think the law says that the speed limits should be based off surveys, meaning you can also raise a speed limit based on surveys unless there is a good reason not to like a ton of accidents in the area. Somehow there always seems to be a “good” reason though to be fair speed limits have risen on highways over the last few decades.

Went up and skied a little at rose today. Looks like they’ll be running with Lakeview feeding Lone Tree and Kit Carson Bowl. I imagine with a little snow they could get Galena open too. Also of note was the fully graded area for the new tubing center and advance work toward the 431 crossing

Friend of mine who works up there told me several days ago they were shooting for the following Fri, the 8th.
Looked like they were blowing all day today on the upper half so maybe the cold weather has accelerated their plans.
Guess we'll find out pretty quick...

Yeah I don’t think the guy that told me has any inside knowledge. They definitely could open tomorrow but Saturday seems more likely

The “Kit Carson” (I think) run looked filled in nicely from the bottom of 431 on the Galena side this morning at 9:45 am….

Nothing on Rose’s website and the earliest tickets you can purchase are for 11/27…

Back in the day, when we rode the SkiBus up from BayArea, NoStars would often be our 1st call of the season, around Dec 5th.
    Skid trail etc.
Any NS snowmaking action this season yet?

You going to be the ski swap Mikey?

If anyone in the Tahoe area wants a pair of Nokian Hakkapelitta 8s on 16” Pilot wheels let me know. They have about half tread and have sat in my crawlspace (no light) for 2 winters now. $100. Can pickup in Auburn or near Sugar Bowl.

Given the forecast for the coming week, if you’re looking for some non-skiing activities, Reno born author Willy Vlautin will be reading and singing/playing guitar down the hill next weekend at two events.

Vlautin is one of my favorite authors and his debut novel, Motel Life takes place in/around Reno and is a bittersweet masterpiece.
I have bequeathed copies of his books to a few Mags over the years (Corky, TheFrush, and a few others); all have become fans and read some of his other works.
highly recommend checking him out if you can; if not at these events, grab one of his books and give it a read. I recommend The Motel Life, though The Free is probably my favorite of his that I have read.

Check his website for more info:
    https://www.willyvlautin.com/

Here’s the deets on the events next weekend:

Saturday November 9, 2024 @ the Downtown Reno Library

Sunday November 10, 2024 @ The Holland Project

    PS
There might be a quasi-mini Mag meet-up at the Sunday gig…

About 5” on barker pass on top of 3”. Good base snow. Went by the ski swap and the line to get in looked insane and I was mostly buy-curious so I skipped it

we got a few things in that folks scored, and a few folks in that didn’t score

I think I sold a half dozen pair of ski boots today - new Scarpa TX Pro has a lot of interest

I’ve been going to that ski swap since 2009 or 2010, there’s always a long line. Scored pretty well: three lightly used pairs of smaller all mtn skis for some teens and a lightly used shell for another teen. All for very good prices. Saw “Walter Sobchak,” who was volunteering.

Looking for a used pair of xc skis with nnn-bc binding for one of my kids. Mainly just want the bindings. The kids 160cm tall and ~105#. For tromping around in the woods (not for the groomed track). I can’t get to the Tahoe XC swap next Saturday.

I think they're all blowing and looking for a Thanksgiving opening. This week looks good for snowmaking. Consistently cold overnight temps.

I've got on-snow training for opening weekend. I'm sure the WROD will be entertaining as always.

KW blowing snow on Zach's to the top right now. The natural looks thin and spotty.
