Tahoe '24/'25 - This Thread Shall Not Be Privatized!!

Well crap. I was enjoying a nice bike ride today and someone reminded me that it was time for a new thread, as it snowed an angry inch or two in Tahoe and Powdork even went skiing. So here we are, hopefully on the verge of going skiing, or riding, sooner rather than later. Palisades, Rose and Boreal were all blowing snow this morning but likely mostly for the marketing opportunity it provides. Temperatures are not quite there for efficient snow making. But NOAA is calling for another possibility of a stronger system for next week again, giving us hope.

I like all skiing, whether it be a WROD around Halloween, a midwinter storm, or sneaking the last line of corn down the mountain. I'm a little ambivalent about starting this thread, as my debut thread for last season resulted in a season that was only about 90% of average. Then again, having it not be a banner year for snow meant that crowds were smaller, especially during the holiday periods. Personally I liked that.

The privatization of skiing really bums me out. Homewood is just the latest in a string of mountains that are on their way to becoming a playground for billionaires. While there's nothing truly amazing about the terrain at Homewood, it has always served as that place to get away from the masses while still having lift served skiing. Nobody know for sure what the fate of Homewood will be, but the Discovery Land Company has not done much at the Yellowstone Club, or around Big Sky, that gives you any comfort that they will do the right thing here in Tahoe. The 1% is demanding and they want what they want. Speaking of which all of those fucking big jets that fly into Truckee these days...fuck that shit.

So we are not off to the races just yet, but it is time to tune up your engines and make your way to the starting line...see you at whatever ski area opens first in Tahoe...and then at Schralpine Ghettos.

    WEATHER & TRANSPORT INFORMATION

TART Connect A system of on-demand rideshares that are free and fill in gaps between bus routes/schedules. That said, who are we kidding? For most of Tahoe, public transportation if a damn pipe dream, with the exception of South Lake Tahoe.

    TRAFFIC / ROAD CONDITIONS
Nevada DOT - Highway Controls Summary 511 or 877-687-6237 (877-NVROADS)
    nvroads.com

    I-80 Chains Bot on Mastodon

50 Chains bot on Twitter (Cancelled by a friggin idiot...no replacement that I can find)

CalTrans QuickMap - You'll need to find the Tahoe region and set options for chain controls, etc

    ACCIDENTS & INCIDENTS

California Highway Patrol - Traffic Incident Page (select area - Truckee, Sacramento, Bishop, etc.)

    APPS

California Road Report for iOS: a great resource for conditions, incidents, cameras, chains. CarPlay compatible. You do need to spend time learning the app before you need it. Documentation is minimal.

    WEBCAMS

    Magnifeye CalTrans & Resort cams

    WEATHER AND TRANSPORT INFORMATION

BA's Open Snow People in Tahoe seem to love this guy, some say he is a paid resort shill. Once he started charging money for his reports, I stopped paying attention.

WeatherWest Daniel Swain is "the man" when it comes to knowing California weather. Unfortunately, Swain is such a big deal that he only gets time to post to WeatherWest about once a month. That said, check out the comments section on each post as there are hundreds of weather geeks and wanna be weather geeks adding in their 2 cents on a daily basis.

Pivotal Weather This is one of many places to check out both current conditions and the weather models. You have to know what you're looking for...

    Recommended Food and Shop Zone

Couple of things here, I pretty much spend all of my time in Truckee and North Tahoe, so if you have ideas for SLT or other areas, PM me and I can add them here. Second thing...it is damn expensive in Tahoe, as in ridiculously expensive. We're talking $28 bucks for a burger and fries or $40 bucks for a pizza. So for foods, let's not talk about the expensive stuff. Where can us mere mortals get decent food without breaking the bank?

    Truckee

Golden Rotisserie: Located near the DMV and Dairy Queen. The owner, Sergio, started at Ti's then Bill's and now GR. Hours can be unpredictable. Taqueria slash rotisserie meats

Club Raleys: Made to order pizza and sandwiches, hot foods bar and deli plates along with a decent selection of beer and wine. Fuck, I really should not share this.

Buoy And Trap: Better than average seafood joint out near Full Belly Deli. It's not cheap but I have heard the lobster rolls are good. Many locals suggest going for happy hour. They are also a fish market.

    Kings Beach

La Mexicana - Meat market meets bakery meets taqueria

    The Burrito Window

    Bear Belly Brewing Co

    Tahoe City

Moe's Original BBQ: The BBQ stuff is pricey but decent. The sides are meh. But go for the beer. The Three Sheets Brewery located within is producing some fun local brews. I like their Kolsch and the Yacht Rock.

    Incline Village

Ti's Rotisserie - They're back, after a big grease fire last winter. Higher prices but still good. Still cash only?

    South Lake Tahoe

    ????

    Ski And Board Shops

Tahoe Sports Hub: On West River Street, where locals buy gear. Great selection and great staff. Excellent boot fitting.

The Backcountry: Located in Truckee near Tacos Jalisco Mikey B works there and sez "the best fkn backcountry ski and splitboard shop in the area"

Start Haus: Now located on Deerfield Dr just past the car wash. This is the place to go for serious race level gear and tunes and race boot fitting. New location will eventually be off 89 just before the mouse hole...either a brilliant idea or a fucking traffic nightmare.

Olympic Boot Works In Olympic Valley...the place to go for boot fitting according to OV locals.

Best Fit Boots in Truckee in the old outlet mall next to Pico's (recommended by SnowMachine)

    SUPPORT MAG PROJECTS

Mags be busy or they just don't tell us what's up...let me know what I can add here:

UnofficialAlpine.com Shameless self-promotion here. UA has been dedicated to keeping the Alpine Meadows community alive and well since 2008. Fuck...we are boomers. If that's not your thing, then don't bother. Ski reports, weather reports, bitching about parking reservations...we got it.

Patchskiing.net Vets has like 3056 consecutive months under his belt and he does a damn good job of documenting those trips. If you are looking for ideas on where to ski to maintain your streak, there's probably not a better resource.

Spence Sez It's not about skiing, but Dookey is an incredible movie reviewer and you will be entertained.

Tahoe '24/'25 - This Thread Shall Not Be Privatized!!

we also do “not backcountry” ski and snowboard sales and service, both at our Truckee store, and at our sister store Olympic Valley Ski and Bike - we do it all

we have a year-round full service mountain shop, as well as a year-round full service mountain bike shop in Truckee

our E-commerce game is good and growing

we aren’t the fanciest shop, but we’re certainly the crustiest

I will always go out of my way to help a Maggot out

Bahahaha. Last year I got locked out of the site for several weeks for no reason. Then one day it decided to work again. This site is as grumpy as it's members

Forecast looks cool at night this week. Let them guns blaze, er um...... spray?

On the food note, I want to put a good word in for a newer place here in Truckee called Buoy & Trap - located next to Full Belly Deli. I’ve been buying a ton of fresh fish and the quality is top notch, and you can also pick up a proper New England lobster roll. Really glad someone stepped up and filled the void after Morgan’s closed.

I received this Email From Sierra watch:

The Placer County Board of Supervisors will take up Alterra’s proposed development at a public hearing on Tuesday, November 19 in Kings Beach.

This is it – the last step in the public planning process and a great opportunity to Turn out for Tahoe!

Let us know you’re coming and we’ll save a purple Tahoe Truckee True shirt for you to wear at the meeting.

    WHAT:
    Placer County Board of Supervisors
Public Hearing on Palisades Tahoe Proposal

    WHEN:
    Tuesday November 19, 2024
    9:00 a.m

    WHERE:
    North Tahoe Event Center
    8318 North Lake Blvd.
    Kings Beach, CA

And let’s not forget what’s at stake.

Alterra Mountain Company seeks to transform Tahoe with development of a size, scale, and scope the region has never seen – including 850 condo and hotel units with 1,493 new bedrooms and nearly 300,000 square feet of commercial space.

The main attraction would be a 90,000-square-foot indoor amusement park that Alterra hopes would draw 300,000 visitors every year.

According to the environmental review documents, it would add 3,300 new daily car trips to Tahoe traffic, demand 78,000,000 gallons of water annually from the local watershed, and make Olympic Valley a construction zone for 25 years.

Alterra’s project would take every problem facing North Tahoe and make it worse:

It would make it harder to find a place to live. Although the proposal would include some dormitory-style workforce housing, it’s mostly a toxic mix of low-paying jobs and high-end condos. According to the Town of Truckee, Alterra would create a “shortfall of housing for 939 employees.”
It would make it impossible to evacuate in the case of wildfire. With only one way in and, during a wildfire – no way out, the County’s own environmental assessment concludes that it would take evacuees more than 11 hours to drive 3 miles from Palisades Tahoe to Highway 89; those stuck in the valley would be sent to a parking lot or a golf course to “shelter in place.”
It would add to the pollution that is destroying the famous clarity of Lake Tahoe. According to the League to Save Lake Tahoe, Alterra’s project would “do the opposite of Keep Tahoe Blue.”

Tahoe deserves better. And for more than twelve years, we’ve been standing together to secure a better future for Olympic Valley and keep Tahoe Truckee True.

Now, once again, it’s time to turn out for Tahoe.

    See you there!
