Yesterday's wind and precip were quite raw at SB. With about 5 inches of slush in the driveway overnight Friday in Serene Lakes, it started snowing hard about 7:00 a.m.. Found some cream cheese "pow" that was soft and quiet but not much ski pen while making X-mas tree laps as Lincoln and Disney in the a.m. were delayed. After the large crowd lined up for Lincoln finally gave up standing around in the wind and snow, I scooted by and lucked out on snagging the second chair. Got a few laps without crossing tracks and some cuff deep ski pen. Snow turned to rain about 1:00 p.m., and retired back to the cabin to dry out. Went back out for a hopeful hour of power at 3:00, that was just an hour in a driving rain all the way to the top that only a John Muir wanna-be might be able to appreciate.
Rained hard all night up on the Summit, still raining this a.m., and super windy. Character building.
My character has been built enough. Bring the snow.
Maybe a good day for some ski tuning.....
My kid was taken out at Squaw years ago while making lazy turns under the Emigrant lift on clearly blue family style terrain in mid winter spring conditions. The snow was soft and slow. The dude that hit my kid was plenty competent but racing friends to the base.
It's not the snow. It's people assuming they are better than they actually are and thinking they can avoid a moving object.
Skier code calls for 15 feet when passing. Few bother with that.
Another time, on an absolutely empty mountain run, some wide legged gaper came flying by me and my kid. I reached my pole out just a bit to create a wider target to go around and the dude skied right into my pole.
He was pissed. Told him I was glad he stopped so I could stand there with him with no one else skiing down the run and demonstrate what 15' looks like. He tried to claim he was that far away from me - but I had moved.
People are dumb and don't give a shit.
I told him to get carry on by try to not ski in the back seat because at speed he is unable to control a turn.
Rains a bummer. Sent the bike in to service my shocks and the surf is junk. Watching that snow level and make plans for later in the week. While all this wet is a bummer, if things pan out, we should see a good base builder that we very much need. And maybe even finish cold.

Sometimes the conditions are great, but a guy just needs to get slammed

Conditions were good for the short lines at Rose summit. All snow and sheltered from the wind. Looks a bit wetter today but we’ll see.

powdork.com - new and improved, with 20% more dork.
My kid was working an accident near the top of HW North Bowl and was taken out by someone who dropped in and lost it. Not hurt fortunately. Eventually they posted a voly at the lip to protect him and his partner (and the guy in the sled). I saw it all happen from the mountain run.
A lot of bombs this morning at SB.
Webcams looks slippery....
Rod, pouring rain with a mixture of sleet and high winds. Disney running slow. No Lincoln or Judah.

Friday looks good… before that, don’t count on it. Wed am maybe for a bit before it gets rained on.
Went over Luther pass at noon, 5 cars of diehards parked at Powderhouse in the rain. Grass lake looks more like a lake than I ever remember
I have a room at Kirkwood Tues-Friday. Always been a bucket list thing to stay there but there is absolutely no way to arrive Tuesday now.
I guess the choices are pay through the nose for an extra night Monday or forget about it and show up Friday with everyone else. Any chance at all they bomb out 5 to get it open on Wednesday or just run a couple bunny lifts and do everything Friday? Realistically most of the patrol probably lives in Tahoe and needs the roads open?
Just from the tone of the highway patrol sites I could see them proactively closing roads earlier on Monday like 5/6pm and even getting there Monday could be a close call.
Im not sure what you mean but you won't have an issue getting to Kirkwood. This isn't one of those, close the highway for days, kind of storms. Kirkwood is good about opening terrain. Kirkwood is a killer place to be shacked up during a storm cycle. It sure as hell won't be busy.
Only thing more embarrasing than taking out a coach is taking out a patroller. Oof.
I sure wish this rain would turn to snow. I guess this weather makes my decision to get some shop work finished easy. I was planning to play hookie this week and ski prior to being mowed over and this tropical spell moving through.
Still raining at 7k. Boohoo.
The patroller who dropped his pole loading Granite a few years ago was pretty embarrassed when I handed it to him at the top. He was a National though so maybe it doesn't count for beers.
Dentist patrollers!! Good on those guys for volunteering their time. As long as they dont act like douche canoes.
The pro patrollers at OV are badass mo-fos. It's a serious place to patrol. Hats off to them.
My kid thought he could ski until one of the senior patrollers took him down a line between 75 and RG. He did get to participate in patrol games one year--in the "bomb" throwing contest. I guess his arm impressed them more than his skiing.
After watching sheets of driving rain out the window, waxing skis and drinking another pot of coffee, went for some laps on Disney late yesterday. Other than it was raining hard and then harder, it skied better than expected with soft turns and top of the toe ski pen where it was untracked. There were probably 5 or 10 other enthusiasts out there. In the keeping it positive category, booting up I did see a mom kit out her 4 year old in a customize garbage bag rain shield. The kid then led the charge into the malestrom to shred the gnar with neither complaint nor delay.
Multiple ambulances at AM this morning.
Groomers were firmer than expected.
Kirkwood had a partial opening then closed all lifts today.
Had work in Tahoe Donner so took the skis for a walk in sunrise bowl. Was hoping for still rain soft but it was almost entirely supportable refreeze. Smooth... But the almost was the hard part. Good day for rax.
