Ex-FLDS Group attempts to seize USFS land in SW Colorado
I suspect this one is about to blow up so I figured we needed a thread for it
Probably the best article so far
https://coloradosun.com/2024/10/10/f...orest-service/
The basic summary is that a group of people last week suddenly started fencing off ~1400 acres of USFS land. This is right in the middle of a popular trail system and so understandably everyone here is PISSED. The group is calling themselves the "Free Land Holders Committee" and is being represented by a Patrick Leroy Pipkin, who is an ex-FLDS member who won a lawsuit for wrongful arrest against the FLDS back in 2020 and was awarded several FLDS properties in the judgement. {FLDS is Warren Jeff's polygamous child rapey cult if you've forgotten.) One of those properties is ~160acres in this same area, but the area they're fencing off is definitely USFS land. Free Land Holders say they have claim to the land under a variety of old treaties and laws and seem to be more or less going with the "government can't own land" argument. Sheriff says it's a civil matter and he can't do anything. USFS is trying to go through the courts. Locals are taking down the fence themselves. No shots have been fired... yet.

The US Gov has been to soft on Cliven Bundy and other idiots who think that living on or adjacent to OUR FUCKING LAND makes it theirs. Its bad enough we let these idiots graze their cattle all over our land, but then they act like its theirs and threaten civil war if the laws of the land are enacted.
Send in the Army to quash these fucks

They sure don’t seem to have a problem taking handouts from the government. Fuck them I don’t want my tax dollars supporting them.

Fuck em.
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

Got that right. Way too soft. They're terrorists.
This one is local to me on land I know well. The article I read referenced how the claimed land/fence goes through a local XC track (and there's a number of other trails in that area too - moto/mtb/horse). What a bunch of fucking nimrods. Fuck off.
Mancos has a weird contingent of culty LDS, gay cowboys n girls, plain good ol' boys, odd ball religious sects, hippy sw artists and dirt bags. Montezuma county in general is sort of poor old sw ppl, ranchers, dirt farmers, natives, odd ball militia-types next to drug abusers, etc - conservative county. Definitely plenty of 'it's our land types' but I don't think insurgent agenda types are welcomed; be interesting to see what the public sympathies are.

Why are the twig pigs unable to get their thumbs out of their asses and tell these cultists to fuck off rather than leave it to the locals?

If it legally works out for them there's a nice zone in the Unitas I will have to fence off ASAP before the land rush begins.

Yeah pretty accurate description of the area. It's pretty Western here, that's for sure. I still haven't gotten a clear picture of exactly where the fenceline is/was but it definitely runs right through the middle of the Chicken Creek trail system.
So far public sympathies are pretty overwhelmingly against this. Plenty of wild accusations and misinformation flying on the old Facebook of course but so far it seems to have pretty much united everyone from the good 'ol boys to the hippy chicks.
I'm a bit perplexed by the sheriff's response myself.

The reason the FS isn't doing anything is because it's headed to court.
If a judge sees the FS acting aggressively, that will count against the FS and ultimately your rights of access.
The best thing is that the original claim by the "Free Land Holders Committee" promised no obstruction to public access. Then they put up a fence. The inconsistency and aggressive conduct will count against them in the ensuing (pi) litigation.

That's nuts! Hey just throw up some fence, declare it's yours and everyone will honor it, I just don't understand how a person could reason this shit. If you have a legit claim then go about the right way. It doesn't seem that hard to me. Now legit claim or not all the locals hate you. Have fun with that.

I guess they needed something else to unite everyone after the Absolute Bakery closed. Was planning to be camped at Bogey Draw starting Sunday for most of the week. might be time to ride chicken creek. Kind of weird they would spend the money for a survey and build the fence without any legal claim.

yeah after reading the article they sound alot like the "sovereign citizens" that make you tube videos and sell their one simple trick ideas on line to other gullible idiots
reading and misinterpreting 200 year old treaties and laws sounds pretty brilliant
the locals going out and taking the fence down is awesome keep up the good work
eventually these nuts will resort to gun play

I'm in the next county over, so I'd reckon I'd be a type of Nancy thru their lens. But gay-friendly sw hippy dirt bag ex drug abuser wouldn't be wrong or insulting. Oh wait, I forgot old.
They're deliberate agitators. Stir up a bunch of shit, get attention. Zero good faith and they know it.
Glad to hear it. No doubt they wouldn't get many supporters here in D-town, and Mancos is good people so I can't imagine any one but the outlier-fringe-types. In 'the county', well I don't want to guess anymore - used to be fine, but over last 8 years I've seen too much weird shit. Anyway, back on track - fuck these guys. Fuck their fence. Fuck their couch.
I'm curious about the back story. How'd they select this land and area? Some rando loop hole they think they found specific to this parcel? Or was there a FLDS contingent here that said 'here. this is your place'. Dunno.

Montezuma County Sheriff Steve Nowlin and deputies stood by as locals worked. In a press release the day before, Nowlin had asked residents to not gather and remove the fence.
“The only reason why we’re here is to document and keep the peace, that’s it,” Nowlin said Thursday.
Nowlin made it clear that this was a civil matter, not a criminal one, emphasizing that the courts would ultimately decide the legitimacy of the Free Land Holder claims.
“Let a judge decide who’s right and who’s wrong. Who’s to say who’s right, who’s wrong? What if they’re right? Let it happen in court,” he said, underscoring that his authority did not extend to enforcing or resolving the civil dispute on federal land.
Feel free to take that up with Sheriff Nowlin. Maybe you have a better understanding of the situation than he does.Merde De Glace On the Freak When Ski

that is what is kind of weird. It appears they had some type of legal description for an aliquot part. The S1/16 of section 21,22 fits a legal description. But than no date or license number on the cap.off your knees Louie
