Another what car now thread.
I need a 2nd car (OK 4th) my kid has stolen my 09 Matrix, my wife usually has my Ioniq 5 and I don't want to drive my Tacoma as my 'daily'. I work from home so don't drive much. I'm looking for a 2+2 hatchback in the $20k cad range. I tend to keep my cars a long time, run them into the ground then give them away (see Matrix above) I found a 2014 Scion tC for $9500 with only 78k km its a Toyota so should go forever. Audi TT 140k km $22000 looks fun but don't know much about howdies reliability. Prius is very practical and long lived but, bla AF. I rented a Mercedes a year ago and really liked the ride, do they make a 2+2 hb?
I live 3 hours from Mercedes Audi Volvo dealers, the only close are Honda Toyota hyundai kia Ford gm dog so if dealer service/repairs are required that's not ideal.
What else should I consider? You are what you eat.

The new Mazda’s. They get great reviews, reliable, priced right, mildly sporty.

How much driving? The sub 100 mile range electrics are dirt cheap and fun in town. Get a 500e for silliness.

Miata.
If you insist on hatchback 2+2, then Subaru BRZ or Toyota 86 is the answer.

I thought about a 100km electric but I'm 80km over a pass from Red Mountain.
BRZ, 86, FRS are on my radar but I'm not stoked on the scoobaroo engine. You are what you eat.

One of my kids has a Hyundai Veloster with the turbo and 6spd. It's a hoot to drive, gets good mileage, cheap maintenance, and (knock on wood) great reliability with like 80k miles on the clock.

Cletus: Duly noted.

I had a BRZ/FRS, and honestly, the Scion tC is a better car. Like it's not just a Subaru engine, the BRZ is a Subaru. A tail happy rear wheel drive Subaru that would be atrocious in even the lightest snow. On the stock tires, it's actually easy to drift it in the rain.
The tC is a sporty Toyota Camry.

My daughter bought a C30 with super low km I was going to buy from her when she started law school this fall but she likes it too much and decided to keep it.

If you want RWD kicks (tailwhips, slides etc.) - BRZ/FRS/86 - solid aftermarket, cars are fairly bulletproof, dynamics are great. Rear seat sucks but who cares unless you have to have people in it.
C30's are fantastic couple cars - refined ride, reasonably fun, rear seats are like another set of 2 front.
Don't have any experience with the others, but the key to this segment are the following factors:
1. How many people in it? Things like the BRZ are shit if this number is above 2 on any regular basis.
2. What roads/driving? Twisties = fun. Traffic or highway - different priorities.
3. Do you actually have a good grasp on driving dynamics and value them? If so, go RWD (no hate if you don't, just that if you do, FWD kinda fall to the side)
4. What weather conditions and other factors are you planning on?
