Help a Jong dad with bike purchase

My daughter is turning 13 this month and loves to hit the trails in the forest behind the house. Her current one is too small and not capable. I know fuck all about bikes.

This Giant Anthem (medium) is for sale for $800 bucks down the road. Decent deal? Anything to be wary of if I go check it out. Click image for larger version.

Probably not too bad based on components for the price I think, but that is definitely an XC bike. If she’s all about long miles and moving quick should work fine. If she’s looking for more technical or steeper terrain, would recommend looking more towards a more modern geometry trail bike.

Guessing that’s roughly 2017 which had steeper headtube angle, meaning quite fast steering, now considered kinda twitchy.

This may or may not matter given her use case.

    YMMV

Thanks VT. She is just getting her feet under her when it comes to mountain biking so I’m not even sure either of us know what she is looking for beyond it being fairly proficient, decent components and a decent deal. The trails she rides aren’t especially technical but I could see her getting into that and she has a great playground where they are available. I may keep doing some research instead of being impulsive here. Just thought if it was a screaming deal (people in this neck of the woods have a real “pay it forward” mentality so sometimes stuff pops up drastically underpriced) I may scoop it up.

good deal for a good starter bike.

See if shes into more riding, and buy something more suited to that when/if it happens?

Might be more gravel, more Enudro, or more "bikes are dumb, I dont want to ride"

mtnlion has the right idea here. that's a decent deal on a bike that she can use to get exposed to a variety of riding and if bitten by the bug will know what her next bike should be as a result.

Thanks guys. I spent one day doing more research and it was sold! But now I know a ton more.

If anyone has a bike in the Seattle area, let me know

Market in that price range is pretty decent, it’s the 2.5k+ market that is super slow.

If she’s a size medium I imagine you’ll find lots of options like that Anthem.

I’m in the market for an XS 27.5 for my 11y/o which is far fewer options.

Sticking w Giant as an example, think Anthem ~100mm and Trance ~120mm bikes 2018 and newer would be good criteria to use to look for bikes. Probably want to avoid anything like a Trance X ~140mm or more for her uses from your description.
