Recommendations for Split/Trogir Croatia
Staying about 5 days in Split/Trogir for 4-5 days in next month and need some beta. Let's hear all about some must do for a old couple in their 50's.
Haven't decided a place to stay or secured a car yet.

Split is awesome. Definitely check out Diocletians palace at night. They light it up pretty well. If you have a car take the ferry to Brac. Lots of private feeling beaches and cool towns. The high point of the island has great 360 views. The famous beach on the island is Zalitni Rat (sp?). The town of Bol has some old hotels that were abandoned after the war and they are covered in really cool graffiti.
Spend a day or two in Rovinj and day trip from there to Pula to see the Roman coliseum. Lots of very good northern Italian fish and pasta type restaurants in that area. And if you are going next month you may hit fresh olive oil season which will ruin you for life. It may be a little early but it may also be truffle season which is a double score. Such an awesome and beautiful area, you’ll have a blast.

How many full days do you have? I think Rovinj is about a 5 hour drive from Split so you’d have to decide if it’s worth it for you. With 4 or 5 days, I’d do it, but I don’t mind long drives and the countryside is pretty scenic. Plitvice National Park is basically on the way from Split to Rovinj if you wanted to break up the drive and check out the waterfalls. If you are going island hopping after your time in Split, you could skip driving to Brac.

I think if you are going to do an island hoping charter I don't think there is a need to go to Rovinj. I'm assuming you'll hit Korcula and Hvar on your tour, and combined with Trogir and Split, you'll get a good idea what Rovinj is like without spending 5 hours in the car getting there. I would definitely hit the Plitvice Lakes NP. You could take two days to do that and spend some time off of the coast which is very different from the interior of the country. (Tour or car rental) Also, there is great hiking up above Split, so if this your thing look into hiking on Mosor Mountain.(Taxi or car rental) Klis has a pretty neat fortress to visit, and you can do that in a 1/2 day (tour, car rental, or taxi) from Split. Water should still be warm, so it should be a great trip. (My son and I did some diving around Korcula which was a lot of fun if that is of interest. The water is like swimming in a pool.)
Charlie, here comes the deuce. And when you speak of me, speak well.

If you’re not opposed to a tour guide, we did a full day tour in Split with a local guide and had a great time. If it’s anything like it was 7 years ago I’d recommend it. I don’t remember specifics other than eating well and enjoying the guide’s wealth of knowledge. I still remember the guy’s name (Robi), and it looks like others are still enjoying his tours.

I didn't read Zion, Zig Zag's not close enough - Pula would be worth a visit but would eat up some time. The Coliseum there is impressive.
There are two parks within a day trips distance to Split that are very similar - Plitvice or Krka. Krka is closer (but smaller) and may be easier on you schedule. https://www.theworldwasherefirst.com/plitvice-or-krka/
As ZZZ stated, Diocletian's Palace is the real draw in Split.Charlie, here comes the deuce. And when you speak of me, speak well.
