    Hamstring tear

Did it large playing tennis last week. My physio said it's bad but not fully detached. Black from back of knee to Achilles. This fucking sucks. Anyone else have to go through this? I'm told 3 month recovery.

I've pulled mine plenty over years of football, ultimate and even skiing and even had some minor tears but this is a pretty nasty one.

I’m confused by bruising on calf related to hamstring tear. Am I reading that wrong?

I tore mine waterskiing. It took a good three months to get back behind a boat and years before I didn't think about it, waiting to hit it.
Get as many massages on it as possible.

Whatever you do, do NOT push it to get back early even if it feels like you're good to go. Hammys are notoriously finicky in that regard and people re-injure them all the time by not waiting long enough.

Take it easy on the comeback, I'm still hoping to meet and ski with you on an Indy Pass northern tour this winter.

So saw the doc today because of a serious regression in my progress the last few days, I'm basically back on crutches. All is ok, and I feel like a weight has been lifted, I was actually getting very scared about this whole thing. He checked me over really well for 20 minutes and said the tear is quite serious but it's not totally ruptured (or detached). He doesn't see a need for, or benefit from, surgical intervention. The big swelling and pain in my achilles and ankle (which has made me pick up the crutches again, as it's quite hard to walk) is normal as the nasty inflammatory fluids make their way down the leg. He does suggest complete recovery is 6 months though and that it will be likely another 5 weeks before I can start a real physio program. In the meantime gentle massage (from RMT's) and ultrasound from physios is about it. I would advise anyone against choosing this injury.

Sounds like a nasty tear. I tore a hammy yrs ago driving cross country crammed in a suzuki samurai for 4 days. Got out of the jeep in onterible and hopped on my bike for practice and rippppp. Wasnt near as bad as yours by the sound. I was off the bike for 2 weeks, one dh run and then off for another 2. It still hurt after that and i was worried id tear it worse. All in all it was 2ish months. Basically just limiting movement and lots of hot shower or hot fubs to limber up and flush the bruising out. I was way too scared to try and stretch. Healing vibes G, youll bounce back quicker than forecast no doubt. Pound the water and herbal tea i guess. I was 20 something so i didnt do the pt or massage thing unfortunately

the swelling in your ankle is blood + gravity but also loss of the muscle pump in the leg. One of the functions of the calf muscles is to pump blood and fluid back to the heart. When you're not walking normally on the leg the blood and fluid accumulates. If you can exercise the ankle while you're sitting or lying around it will help. Preferrably against resistance but any active motion--using your own muscles to move the foot up and down instead of having someone move it for you--should help reduce the swelling. That shouldn't affect the hammy but obviously if it hurts the hammy--don't.

There's a large group of veins in the calf muscles called the soleal plexus. When the calf muscles contract blood and fluid is squeezed towards the heart. Valves in the veins prevent the blood from going the wrong way.

Thanks Goat! Much appreciated. My physio did mention to do that foot pumping thing so I have been doing that. Nice to hear it confirmed from you and I'll be more diligent about it now too

A compression stocking, knee high or even thigh high, can help a lot with the swelling, too.

Thanks Jerlane! I've got a big ass tensor on it from knee to butt but I do own a compression sock that will go to the knee. I'll wear it.

Could be so much worse considering how easily your life can accommodate this less than desirable (short term) side step

therapeutic vibes to a shorter than expected full recovery, my friend

Thank you my friend! Much appreciated, and I too hope the recovery is a little faster than the book says. It won't be for lack of trying. Hope you're well buddy!

All the best with the recovery process, and the required patience.

I did a partial tear early April '23 doing the splits while surfing, but managed to ski in Aug-Sep '23, although my right leg was weak as hell. Slowly getting stronger, but my arse still hurts when driving more than about 2 hours. It's a slow process.

Dan the man, buster and Island - thanks guys. It's appreciated. Feeling way better the last couple of days, still some bruising but no points of real tenderness (that's just the last couple of days), so I'm much happier. Physio is doing something called : 2 treatments. PBMT (Bioflex is the company that makes the machine) and low intensity laser therapy. Supposedly this will help heal faster (breaking down scar tissue maybe). Also got some real basic exercises to do and she suggests pool walking, hot tubbing/jacuzzi for 15 minute sessions, gentle massage are all good things
