This is a bummer but goodness when was their last solid new product?

The Ion came out in 2014 and was a solid entry to the binding market but it wasn’t ever substantively updated. The skins have always been bad and I don’t know anyone who has really loved the skis.

    definatly the bummer

I broke my ankle on Targa's

I didn't love the G3 skin glue and replaced it with Gold label pretty quick otherwise the skins were ok IME

For people ( mostly guides) blowing up multiple RAD1's the ION was a pretty solid product

yeah they never got their shit together on the skis

Posted this in the main board thread and will repost here...

Not remotely surprised. Sucks for their employees, but they were a company who got left behind in just about every aspect of ski touring equipment and made no attempts to keep up. When was the last time anyone here bought something from G3 at full retail price... 5+ years ago?

The only thing they had left that was any good was shovels, probes, and some small av gear. Helmets were nice but theyre relabdled pret helmets. All the bindings and skis had failure issues and their warrantee was hit and miss and seemed to get worse. Bindings were nice. A few little durability fixes and they wouldve had something. Too little too late on the fixes. Not surprised they went under. Its really too bad . They really had something to build off of

where did G3 get their skis made ?

my buddy sold G3 skis for 8 yrs and claimed he never skied a g3 ski he liked same with his racer son

At a time when Dynafit was selling the rad 1 which had the 4 wood screws that would pull out the plastic body just from walking long, the ION used 4 machine screws to sandwich the top to the main body which looks pretty smart I thot

so G3 introduces the ZED which used 4 wood screws to hold the top on so wtf eh ?

but I don't know if it was a problem

I did find those skin tools were absolutley idiot proof so a guy who shouldn't own tools ( my roomie ) could trim his own skins altho I watched just in case

but IME an olfa box cutter made a nicer job of the egdes, just check 3 times you are shifting the skin the right way

Well that explains the "Craft Ion" bindings (mix-n-match) they've had on the website the month or so.

I feel g3 needed to either buy a avalanche beacon company or have a distribution agreement with a beacon company. So much of the avalanche gear market is driven by the newbie beacon/shovel/probe bundles.

The rest of their products were unremarkable and not innovated on past the mid-2010s.

I never owned a set of G3 skis but the magnetic edges sounded pretty cool. They also used to sell the appropriate binding grease for metal/plastic tech bindings (Dow Molykote equivalent or similar) which other binding companies don't seem to offer. (If you a medium amount of Molykote the easiest source I found was eBay).

yeah, i was always intrigued by that magnet thingy. it looks cool and all but, with my luck, i figured i’d end with up a shitload of random metal bits stuck to ‘em… either from the ground or whatever shit’s been rollin’ around in the ‘ol tracker.

well a lot ski factories make the skis for other brands

so a ski factory should be able to make whatever they are told ?

Is the issue the old Tua factory or whomever was telling the factory what to make ?

Not just guides, everybody seemed to be able to get "pro deal" which really cut into an independent stores booking orders. One year we mounted 24 "alien" mounts, meaning pro form etc, while sitting on a dozen IONs ourselves.
They shot shot themselves in the foot really.
As mentioned above the warranty department was hit and miss.

Bummer. I have a pair of zeds that have been great for a bunch of years. And the first generation tonics were the last teli ski I loved. I also don’t get the hate for their skins. Took a pair of Pomocas to Japan and after a couple days realized they were useless in cold and picked up a pair of g3s that were bomber. H

I’m no G3 lover but I am surprised you don’t see more Zeds out there, for a lot of skiers they would be a better binding than ATK raiders and cheaper too. I am confused as to why other companies like Pomoca and ATK get put on a pedestal. Let’s not forget ATK had their own quality control issues in the last few years and I have seen their bindings fail in several different ways. I’ve owned Pomoca and G3 skins and had more issues with Pomoca (neither are my favorites. Pomoca fails miserably in cold temps when it’s blowing fine snow crystals and G3 is designed more for North American winter temps but it can have issues as well. The two brands are the worst offenders in leaving skin glue stuck to the base of the ski.

Alpine touring is still a relatively new sport and there are no big brands with a product line where everything is rock solid. In fact, I can’t think of any company that has more than one exceptional product line. What comes to mind for me is Dynafit (underrated skis and decent softgoods) and Ski Trab (bindings and skimo apparel). I guess Salomon and Atomic make good skis and their tech binding is ok. My point is, G3 deserves credit for being the only North American company making products across the range of touring equipment, and not just rebranding stuff like so many others do. Even the biggest brands like Dynafit and Black Diamond make way fewer hardwoods themselves compared to G3, but that probably contributed to their downfall.
