Thought it might be cool to start this thread incase there are any canoeists on the TRGz.

Like many kids, I grew up using old aluminum canoes as a humble means of transportation on fishing/camping trips. They were loud, heavy, and cold.

When I arrived in Montana back in the 00s, I got pulled into the drift boat and raft world, and never looked back at canoes until recently.

Turns out they are fun as hell.

I started soloing an 11' Old Town Discovery last year on the little river by my house, and added a 1982 17' Old Town Tripper (Royalex) to the fleet this spring for family and bigger river trips/whitewater runs.

For those looking to up their canoe game or get into the sport, Bill Mason's 1977 Path of the Paddle series is one of the best instructional video series ever made, IMO. It's worth checking out for pure entertainment value if you're into running rivers on anything. The dude was a canoe wizard, and does some gnarly shit in wood/canvas canoes and jeans.

Excellent. I used to have a super light fiberglass solo. When my first son was still little, I would stick a cooler all the way up in what was supposed to be the bow. I would sit on that and paddle it the other way with him sitting on the seat. Worked great. My sister has that boat now. My only canoe currently is a 17 foot long 3 seat plastic Pelican. I got that one so I could get the whole family out together. It doesn’t get that much use anymore.

Canoes are the pickup trucks of the paddling world. I have been exploring Maine rivers since I was a wee lad.

Based on the interior color and seats that’s an older tripper in very good shape. If you store it outside get some of this to protect it from UV.

Yep, it's an '82- one of the early years with aluminum reinforced gunwales. I got it from the original owner, a good ol boy in Billings, who still had the paperwork from the day he bought it 40+ years ago.
The dude worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and used the Tripper to pole up the Bighorn to check on his (live) beaver traps. After catching them, he would relocate the critters to some little spring on nearby Rez rangeland to turn them into functioning stock ponds. Cool stuff. Loading it onto my car was a legitimately emotional deal for him.

Even though it was stored indoors the vinyl was a little hazy, but a good dose of 303 cleared it right up. Doesn't seem brittle like some other older Royalex boats I've checked out.

Had a fun time paddling the local trickle on Friday afternoon. Too low to be any fun on a raft, perfect for a couple of idiots with canoes.

Those Sportspal/Radison canoes were/are the real deal.

Got an old one (80s model) sometime around 2011 for like $300 bucks. I’d equate the freedom it provided me in high school equal to what a bike did in elementary/middle school.

Tried to find a picture of my setup but failed… It had a trolling motor mount which was great for fishing lakes/reservoirs or the occasional lazy river.

Great idea for a post. They truly are pickups for the Lake. This clipper has provided great adventures year round.

Maybe I'll use this space to agree with the pickup truck analogy. Canoe camping is great. Axe? Cast-iron skillet? Cast-iron dutch oven? No problem to bring 'em all.

I have been fortunate to have some really top-notch canoe experiences throughout Maine -- ~10-day trips on the Moose and Allagash Rivers as a wee lad and slightly less wee trip leader, shorter trips mixing salt and fresh water and some island hopping in Penobscot Bay, lake trips... Great stuff. Mostly in wood/canvas canoes. Some in Trippers, those things are absolute beasts.

I just got back from four days in the Boundary Waters. Great weather, great site, good fishing. Hard to beat! I’m not the best fisherman, so any walleye is good for me!
