Have you seen Slater's surf ranch? The wave is gorgeous, shot right it would look great on TV. It would also enable a caliber and style of surfing that is ideal for an Olympic audience--high performance maneuvers and mind-blowing aerials that you're never, ever going to see happen on mid-summer SoCal mushburgers.
Would the LA organizing committee go for this, though? Southern California is very much sold as being a beach destination. That's a tough pill to swallow to have them say, with all that Pacific coastline, we can't really stage a decent surfing competition in the ocean.
I totally forgot about that wave place and I’ll wager no one has Lemoore on their Olympic Venue bingo card. Let’s do it. And add cow tipping as an event
i'm for the wave pool - or go to Peru...
surf on the west coast in summer - blah
One of the spots in contention is Trestles which is more consistent in summer than most of SoCal, but there's still a decent probability that it could be flatsville. Also, the Olympics are fundamentally different than a WSL event. The subtleties of wave selection, position/priority, etc. are lost on a general audience. There's huge upside to being guaranteed to be able showcase the highest possible caliber surfing.
Maybe a longboard nose riding epic in Malibu and/or windansea followed by a longboard whomping session at the wedge.
There's plenty of time for them to build a wave pool before the event.
They didn't need to worry about spectators at Teahupo'o so it was more of a made for TV venue. Given the fact that they didn't show shit on TV for surfing, did it really matter?
For a surf contest, Trestles with a swell like last weekend would be ideal.
For a spectator event, Trestles would be a shit show. E-bike sales would explode though.
Yeah, they need to build a wave pool on the beach. The Best of both worlds. I don't know anything about surfing, just a casual spectator, but it seems unreasonable to me that winning or losing can be determined just by what waves arrive during the set. A wave pool would remove that element of luck and let surfing ability determine the winner and loser
Wave pool with a stadium around it right on the beach would be pretty awesome. Very spectator and tv friendly.
You guys don't quite grasp the scale of these "pools." The one in Lemoore is over 2,000 ft long and 250 ft wide and the foil is pushed by a locomotive engine. You're not building one on the beach.
With all the success this Olympics I wonder if USATF found something in their training. Whether it is rest cycle, nutrition, strength. With all the data from wearables maybe one little thing made a difference.
I know in swimming the study done at places like Cal Berkeley looks to identify 1/1000 second advantages of certain techniques. I learned so much at their clinics. Volumes more in a couple hours than I did in years of hs and college swimming.
Why not Pickleball in LA?
It’s too loud. The birds. Think of the birds.

If curling is an Olympic sport, why not Cornhole?
If curling has a sweeper, cornhole should have a wiper
