Selection rules limiting the number of athletes from a single country doesn’t mean the athlete who finishes, say, 4th behind their country person in national qualifying isn’t the 4th best at their discipline in the world.
it seems a really weird position to insist these are all fantastic athletes in the Olympics and let that penumbra cover athletes that obviously aren’t.

Saying she competed and was competing implies she was competitive which was never the case. Aside from a mass casualty incident there was never a chance of getting near the top half of the rankings, much less the medal stand. I can sign up and run a road race tomorrow. Am I a competitor? Hell no.

competitor: a person who takes part in an athletic contest.
To say you competed in something does not have to do with whether you have a chance at winning."fuck off you asshat gaper shit for brains fucktard wanker." - Jesus Christ
"She was tossing her bean salad with the vigor of a Drunken Pop princess so I walked out of the corner and said.... "need a hand?"" - Odin
"everybody's got their hooks into you, fuck em....forge on motherfuckers, drag all those bitches across the goal line with you." - (not so) ill-advised strategy

I watch this stuff in a private browser. That means I get fresh recommendations based on my recent, not comprehensive, browsing history. For some reason Google & YouTube algos think I'm an elite track athlete and are recommending track training content. What I've learned, stating the obvious, is track athletes are really impressive all around athletes.
Femke Bol, for example, does heavy Olympic style weight lifting with lots of cleans. squats, heavy iso deadlifts, etc. These people are not only fast, they're strong and powerful too. Of course, the two go together but seeing a slim almost six feet tall 140lb woman throwing heavy weights around is believing.

I don’t wanna let this go by w/o acknowledging.
Chapeau.
I mean you were in the stadium? That’s insane.
So did the place go quiet like after the Curry flurry?
Also:
Not sure if this can be imbedded but it’s Curry’s shots in many different languages. There’s even an: “Ooh La La”

This.
I had a close friend (visited him outside of Louisville in May when I went to the PGA) that was the 6th best 100m butterflier in the world in 1984. Couldn't make the US Olympic team.
Sadly, he's now battling ALS but doing a fair job of kicking its ass.
We drank a fair amount of bourbon that night and caught up on 40 years...

They were upstarts, but they were serious. They were trained by a former US Olympian, and they finished above the US in their second Olympics 1992, IIRC. Didn't they have a team at Sochi too? Those guys are cool That's different than an intermediate skier competing in Olympic halfpipe or doing the doggie paddle one lane over from Michael Phelps. I just don't see anything inspiring about getting to the Olympics for a sports you haven't even trained for.

They used to allow three swimmers from the same country per event, but reduced that in maybe 1976 (?) because the US was too good and often swept the medals. That would happen very rarely today, but the rule stands unlike track where it's still three per country per event max.

I remember an Olympics where they had to pull an African swimmer out of the water to keep him from drowning. As time goes on more and more Olympic sports have minimum qualifying times. I was looking at the men's 400m run. Q time is 2 seconds off the WR. The next step is getting rid of countries and having all the athletes compete on their own. No money for that though.

Margot Tenenbaum is an elite tennis athlete. Good for her attempting the switch to winter sports

My brother came in 4th at the Pan Am games in equestrian 3 day event. The USA had the 3 podium spots and he was offered the bronze because of a rule similar to above where there could not be a "sweep."
His response was something along the the lines of "I'd be embarrassed to claim that medal, thank you very much."
IMHO there should be no more judged sports added to the games. Anything new should be timed or scored.what's orange and looks good on hippies?

rails are for trains
If I had a dollar for every time capitalism was blamed for problems caused by the government I'd be a rich fat film maker in a baseball hat.

Moussambani seems like cool dude too. He kept training (i.e. learning how to swim) and got his time under minute. And I think he managed to get the first ever 50m pool built in his country. But I don't think he should have been an olympian less than a year after teaching himself how to swim.

This is the kind of thing that I have no problem with. Maybe he was not the BEST swimmer in his country but he’s a swimmer representing his country, and he’s going to go back to his country and basically get people toswim. That’s pretty cool.
When I was in LaGrave after Eddie, one of the UK guys I was with was going to start a clothing line with Eddie the Eagle.

My son says the surfing is pretty good in Yemen. US has 4 years to invade to get rid of the Iranian backed Houthis.

We can - just save those zones for when the games are in Chicago, not LA.

A mechanical wave pool is the obvious answer. Dependable, and consistent.
