The peacock highlight vid for the mens gymnastics all around comp was fun to watch and listen to as the announcers start to realize that the unexpected Japanese youngster was going to take it.

I kept thinking if Hocker hadn't been blocked in the first time he tried to go up the inside they both would have gained a couple more feet.

Ingebrigtsen got his just deserts. Blocked Hocker on the inside, then Kerr on the outside, wound up in 4th. Boo hoo.

Meh, the block was fine. Just desserts was letting the inside open up again, and overcooking it trying set a WR instead of just bringing home the gold and having nothing left for the kick.

Nuguse has known to be a strong kicker since college. 5-10m and he would’ve overtaken Kerr who started to lose momentum in the last 20-30m as Nuguse came up.

Nuguse kicked and closed the same as Hocker in the final 200m, but he was a step ahead at the bell and couldn’t stay up on Hocker when he moved at 300m out. Hocker closing in 39.6 at that pace is in insane.

Jakob went out too hard and admitted that post race. 56 would have been a hard opener but 54 was too much:

“No human has ever run faster than 3:29 while leading wire-to-wire without a pacer. Ingebrigtsen was trying to run 2-3 seconds faster than that in Paris.”

He was gracious in defeat, which is a nice change and I’m confident he’ll get some hardware and likely a gold in the 5000m

Seriously. Elite middle distance speed is insane in general. Sub-3:30 1500 m is beyond my comprehension.

I love how in the longer track events the lead can change so dramatically at the end. You just don't see that in swimming where the speeds are so much slower.

So who's the bigger dick between Kerr and Ingebrigtsen? They both sort of seemed like assholes in the NBC piece, though I think I'd give the nod to Ingebrigtsen.

I honestly wonder if Ingebrigtsen opened up the inside again because he realized that was the only hope to keep Kerr from winning.

The commentary I've been seeing is that Inge moved outside to block Kerr, not realizing/thinking that Hocker was a threat on the inside. Also, pretty interesting to see the commentary around how the lack of a pacer or pacing lights impacted the race

Does anyone else think BMX racing is dumb and pointless? It would be so much more fun to watch as a time trial format with one rider starting every 30 seconds.

Swimming = snail racing

Being in a pack also influences the dynamic a lot. I suspect things would play out differently if they were confined to their own lane like swimmers are.

Indeed it is. I once read that the fastest self-propelled Olympic sport is cycling and the slowest is swimming. Even in the 50 free the average speed is just over 5 mph.

That's likely why he opened the inside the first time. Then he moved back in and Hocker gave him a tap in the kidney. He had to know Hocker was there the second time.

that will not hurt his standing with the french ladies...

Hocker probably takes another two tenths of a second off the OR if he there had been a clear lane coming into the straightaway. My guess is that then forces Kerr to go about 20 meters earlier and then Nuguse catches him at the end and gets him with the lean by about .005 or thereabouts. In any event that was a great tactical run by Hocker. If you look at the replay, he made a great decision about 35 seconds or so into the race when he started to drift back and lose contact with the front group and made a strong acceleration to close the gap. If he hadn't done that I don't think he's getting the gold and fighting for the bronze.
