I think this is the most sensical thing to ever come out of the IOC. "Hey, instead of blowing $90MM on a sliding facility that will likely fall into disrepair in 5 years, why don't you use one of the dozen others around the globe, two of which are in your backyard, insead?"
I have to think this is the necessary path forward for global competition events, much like the US-CAN-MX World Cup - spread that shit out. Autocracies like China, Russia will still want to blow billions to make single venue events, and the US is capable of hosting using/updating existing facilities, but I can't make the argument that these events are good for many other nations.I still call it The Jake.

Yeah, it makes so much sense I'm shocked. They've seemed immune to public opinion and the dwindling number of suckers -- er, cities -- interested in hosting for so long. Is the IOC finally pulling their heads out of their asses?

My town (Whistler) hosted some Olympic events back in 2010. It was a pretty great party, the events were cool, and we got a updated highway and a bunch of snowmaking improvements that saved our bacon in a couple of low snow years. The olympic village became resident restricted housing after the games, which allowed alot of my friends to own homes in Whistler. I'm glad it happened, and I'm glad I was here to experience it.
Having said all of that, it was an insanely expensive boondoggle that I don't feel the need to repeat. The amount of waste, and the priority given to wining and dining government officials and high dollar sponsors was extremely distasteful to witness, especially when seen up close. We thankfully avoided being contenders for 2030 by having the local organizing committee being unable to get their shit together. I hope the olympics never come to my town again

Hahaha, what are they going to do in 2033 when the US is performing a colonoscopy on WADA? Relocate the Winter Olympics on 1 years notice? Insisting on that provision just makes them look corrupt, which I assume they are.

Before you get them you need an autocratic Egomaniac spending a few billions ( and a few dozen millions in bribes) to feed his ego. Soo.... Maybe if trump gets reelected.
It's a war of the mind and we're armed to the teeth.

We're still enjoying many of the benefits of the 1996 Summer Games here: Centennial Olympic Park is still a central hub to downtown, the Braves used the Olympic Stadium for years and now its Georgia State's football stadium, the Athlete's Village is now part of Georgia Tech's dorms/campus, MARTA light rail was vastly expanded (something that needs to continue), the swimming natatorium is still part of Georgia Tech... and IIRC it was the last Games to be 100% funded by corporate sponsorship - all good stuff which makes me wonder what other good stuff SLC will get from this. A train or tram up LCC? Liquor Laws on par with Indiana? An even bigger airport? A mystery box? Who knows what could come of this?

I’m stoked. This opens up a lot of new projects along the Wasatch front. Talking $6.6 billion being pumped into our local economy. Let’s get more light rail!
Salt Lake will be so overpopulated by 2034 that the mass influx of people here won’t make a big difference.
Keeps my house value going up. A probable move out of state for us finally just after the Olympics are here will be great timing too.
