Searching the TRGs: A tutorial

People always complain about the search function. Hopefully this tutorial will help.

There is the easy-to-use "search forum" button that we have all used, and occasionally it works. Let's say I am looking for a thread I started called "The Nutrition Science Thread"



Using that leads to 200+ results, if I scroll down my thread is there on page 1, so success, sort of. But there are 200+ results! And sometimes the result you want doesn't show up or isn't on page 1. So here's how to do a more precise search.

1. Click on "advanced search"



2. Click on "search single content type"



3. Leave the first box (that says "posts") as is. Add in the terms you need to search, such as the keyword (and whether you want to search entire posts or just thread titles), username, what forum or forums you want to search (holding CTRL down allows you to select more than one), the date range you're looking for if any, and whether you want to see every post that meets your criteria or just the threads.



4. So, here you can see that I have indicated I am searching for "nutrition" in thread titles only, in the Padded Room, with any date (and newer), and I want to see threads not posts



5. For the slow among you, I have highlighted the places mentioned above. Note, do NOT click on "go" in the lower left, that only saves your search preferences. Instead, click on one of the "search now" buttons on the right.



6. Voila!



7. One last example. Let's say I am looking for the greatest post in TGR history. You know the one, the Rev's post in the Asspen thread. I know he mentions "steve" in his post (but it's not in the title so I need to "search entire posts"), and I am not sure if it is in the Padded Room or the Hall of Fame, so I select both.



7. And again, voila! Now, in this case I had to go to page 2 of the results because the Rev weirdly later named his dog Steve, so there are a bunch of dog-related posts that are more recent.

The write up is appreciated but it's a bit much to suggest users are 'slow' while posting the most convoluted process to do what is a simple task anywhere else.

Whenever I need to find something I use that search box in the upper right hand corner for "search function" (yep, I search for search function).

Then I see an old thread of mine called "Search Function is Useless"; sometimes on page 1, always by page 2.

Then I scroll down to this post, where this user created a google search link just for the TRGs. It works better than anything I've ever used here.

After going through all that rigamarole to do a simple search you find the thread you're looking for, post in it, and people rag on you for reviving a zombie thread. You can't win.

That’s funny, I posted that back then, and I gave up looking for it. Now I have it in a text to myself for easy reference.
