    Oh good, another streaming service

Whoever posted in the NFL thread that we're all going to have to pay to watch individual games someday soon knew what's up.

Fox Warner Bros Discovery Disney create new sports streaming venture

Curious to see what this new mega sports streaming service does to (a) finally bury traditional cable/dish, (b) raise antitrust eyebrows, and (c) raise the cost of watching what one would consider a "normal" television offering (i.e., local network stations, ESPN, TBS, FX and the usual cast of characters).

I don't want to have Hulu for locals and basic channels, this new sports app for the bulk of the sports I get regularly now on Hulu, Amazon Prime just because I use it for everything else, the MLB team package that I willingly pay for and who knows what other garbage gets signed up for in my house; fuck, DirecTV was easier than all this.

    My thoughts exactly.

Meanwhile I have no clue how I'll stream my favorite baseball team's games this year because the network that has their rights (Bally, formerly FoxSports) is in bankruptcy. Amazon scooped up the rights to all the profitable teams that they want to stream and mine wasn't one of them. Apparently there is a deal in place for Bally to carry the games at 90% of the contract rate for this year but the BK trustee has to approve it. I hate cable/dish but I hate what streaming has done to make shit easier when it comes to just trying to watch a fucking sport with any sort of consistency.

    Right?

    *Boardroom*

Smart guy: "Ok guys, check this out. We're gonna put all of our own highest priced content on one service"

    Other guy: "Like cable"

Smart guy: "No, not like cable, like a streaming service that has ESPN, TBS, Fox, Disney and all the sports that we have under license for the next decade and a half"

    Different guy: "So like, cable?"

Smart guy: "No, why aren't you getting this? We take all of our content, make it available on one platform and charge through the nose for it. We'll find a way to charge for equipment too!"

    Smarter guy: "Like DirecTV?"

    "Bingo."

I think it's cute that you're talking about streaming when most folks on here still use a VCR on the regular.

Some of the best years of my life was when my home didn’t have a TV, or at the least not connected to any cable/satellite service (this was pre-streaming internet options). Thinking it’s time to go back to that lifestyle.

Completely agree. I used to be able to get every IMSA (and some WEC) race on NBC Sports on my basic Hulu package. Same for Alpine and Freestyle Skiing. Now I have to download some app from Outside (that doesn't stream well) to watch (some) World Cup moguls, Peacock if I want to watch (some) Alpine and (some) moguls, and (some) IMSA, and some other pay app if I want to watch the rest of those events. Fuck that.

I got suckered into getting Peacock thanks to the NFL playoff game which admittedly has been nice watching the Rolex24 and some skiing, but that's going away once 30 days hits on principle alone.

Careful, Old Goat and Buttah are touchy about their age.

Benny's not here though, so if you need a target I guess him or James Piotrowski would do.

I can't completely unplug at this point in my life, but fuck I'd enjoy a hell of a lot less screen time.

Yep. Have never owned a cable subscription. Getting pretty close to cancelling what little streaming I *do* pay for...

I dropped the cable company for YouTube TV. Funny part is it gets me the NBC Sports Boston channel which is owned by Comcast, for much less than Comcast. One time fee to buy 3 new Roku sticks. Cheaper than renting boxes from the cables co.

Member when Streaming was going to change how content is delivered? And be cheaper and with infinite selections?

I mean - at some point people are going to realize that they should cancel all "services" and just pay for streaming on demand of just the crap they want to watch.

I've just stopped watching most things. Never had Netflix or any similar service, dropped Amazon prime when they upped the fee (again). Stopped paying for whatever they call the NHL streaming service now. I'll probably stop watching stuff for free on youtube too if they ever shut down adblockers so you're forced to watch ads. The ads shoved down our throats on most things now make the benefit not worth the annoyance.

RE: You Tube, lots of free content like the opening monologues for Colbert, Kimmel and Meyers. Usually had to site through 5-15 seconds of ads, now it seems like anything worth a shit its up to 30 seconds of ads before they roll the content and then at least one interruption for a commercial.

I subscribed to YouTubeTV a while back (3-4 years?) when it was around $35/month. Then it was $49.99. Then it was $64.99. Then they increased it again in the fall to $80/month, and I dropped it. Fuck those guys.

Now we pay for Netflix, Paramount+ and Max, and our total bill is $30/month. I could care less about pro sports these days though, that's where most people get caught up. Although there are more and more one-off events on the streaming services (minus the NFL).

My guess is this new package comes in somewhere around $50/month. Again, fuck those guys... but unfortunately millions of "average Americans" are willing to pay, so they'll keep jacking prices up for shitty content.

In order to binge a show, it typically costs $1.99 an episode give or take. You can sometimes buy a whole season for less. This adds up quickly to the point of covering a month's subscription somewhere. Of course Amazon seems to be offering fewer per episode with a trend towards additional subscriptions.
Fuck. Buying DVDs of shows quickly becomes attractive at those prices. I usually check Walmart to see if there are any bargains to be had for shows I haven't seen. However, for now I'm subscribed more places than I probably know.

If you don't mind the commercials TUBI has some decent free content. I signed up on Black Friday for Hulu & Dsny for cheap. So far they have not had much to get me to watch.

Perhaps people will get a bit more selective on what they want to watch. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Im confused by this, and why people see this as such a negative? All i have ever wanted was the ability to watch NFL, NBA, MLB, and NCAAF. I used to be able to do this with a shitty antennae and free, basic network TV. And then ESPN and TNT, etc started grabbing a piece of the pie and i had to start borrowing logins from friends.

If this new streaming package allows me to watch all the NFL/NBA/MLB/NCAAF games, by paying for a single service, i am all for it. Thats all i need. Thats all ive been looking for. I dont want to pay for 4 different streaming services. How much is this all-sports-in-one package going to cost me?

This is where I'm at. I signed up for Hulu about 5 years ago and it was $29.99/mo and had everything I wanted, locals, Fox Sports regional for baseball games and the basic cable channels.

Then it went up, and again, and then Disney got involved and they packaged Disney+ (which was fine with a young kid in the house) and all the ESPN+ stuff (that I swear I've never used once) and the price went up again. In January the price went up again to the point where its now ~ $90 and I noticed that the basic cable type channels are slowly being plucked away by their own native apps (peacock, etc.) and replaced with music channels like its fucking Time Warner cable in 1996.
