I have also provided some informative links to beta on the Okanogan Range and County, because Republic is right on the other side of Sherman Pass from Kettle Falls. Sherman Peak sits near the border of the Okanogans and the Kettle River Range. Please Note: There is a different Sherman Peak in the Okanogans of the Cascade Range in Washington State. This thread is not for that mountain, but please be aware of it.

    Talking Beta Information

Sherman Pass is located along the highway in-between the towns of Republic and Kettle Falls in Washington State. Kettle Falls is West of Colville, Washington and Colville is North of Spokane, Washington. Sherman Peak lies a short distance from the top of the past, and not too far beyond is Snow Peak, with the Snow Peak Cabin that may be rented. These two peaks and the pass itself provide a valuable opportunity for backcountry skiing and snowboarding in North-Eastern Washington, one of the most remote areas of the lower Forty-Eight States. Please note that there is no avalanche forecast for Sherman Pass, Peak, or the entire Kettle River Range. You are going to have to make your own assessment but you may use data from both NWAC and IPAC. My advice would be to examine similar elevations in the Okanogans (Cascade Range) and the Selkirks.

All of these aforementioned areas are accessed from the Sno-Park at the top of Sherman Pass along the highway. There are also at least two skiable bowls with almost 360 degrees of powder that can be accessed a short walk from the top of the pass. The bowls are actually below the pass and are like inverse peaks, you may ski down to the center and hike back up again for powder laps, potentially without skinning. The amount and type of skiing could be best explained by you downloading the mobile skiing games; "Just Freeskiing" or "My TP 3" for your iPhone or iPad and heading over to the "All Natural" area in each game. In addition to this, there is extreme skiing on the Eastern Face of Sherman Peak, below the cliffs, in-between the steep heavily forested North Face, and gentle slopes of the South Face. The mobile skiing game "Huck It" would provide the best information for you on what the terrain is like at that end of the mountain. I have included links to the apps on the Apple Website, and you do not have to download them, however they are another way that you can experience Sherman Pass/Peak while learning about the area. Your use of these apps in turn benefits those that use Sherman Pass in real life. The Western Face of Sherman Peak offers some of the best non-extreme skiing and is a good path to take up the mountain. There is a trail that encircles the base of Sherman Peak.

Another trail leads from the trail around Sherman Peak from there to Snow Peak next door, along the Kettle Crest Trail, where the Snow Peak Cabin is located. Snow Peak offers excellent telemarking and snowshoeing. Once again, you may rent the cabin for overnight stays. You need a Snow-Park Permit to park in the Sno-Park at the top of the pass. I believe you also need a Discover Pass to access the recreation area. Please use the links to do proper research before venturing out to ski at Sherman Pass. I have included five photos from my first ever ski-tour in December 2009, where we went up Sherman Peak and found sick lines down the Eastern Face. This kicked off my backcountry skiing career. Once again, please remember to use all proper backcountry environmental protocol, pack it in pack it out, leave only footprints (and skin tracks), and take only photos. Be very careful when driving the pass, as it is the highest road in Washington to remain open in Winter. Take some time to examine the links before asking questions, as almost everything is answered by them. Finally, this is the information system for a Free Ski Mountaineering Area. Other than the forest and snow-park pass, you do not have to pay: Therefore there are no lifts, which is exactly how we want it! The point of the Information System is to preserve Sherman Pass for backcountry skiing and to protect the area from environmental exploitation. I hope to put the data from this thread towards fighting climate change and protecting our Winters. In return, for us providing this informational resource (beta) on the area to all of you, we simply ask your support for these causes when visiting the area. Thanks again, and ride safe!

True. But a sled comes in super handy to access Wapaloosie, Scar and Copper which I’d still consider Sherman Pass environs

This is like the Jumbo Glacier of Eastern Washington.

Wasn’t that Bushwacka, some gully at Killington. I think it was in the thread about releasable pole straps

I could see living in Republic. Great brewery, reasonably close to Sherman and Boulder passes. It’s probably about an hour and a half to Red Mountain and just a bit further to Whitewater
