Thatís why itís outrage porn. Look around, itís everywhere.

Outrage porn definitely exists. No question.

    This is not it though.

There was harm done if she lied. To the people actually deserving of awards they did not get or jobs or gigs they did not get because Buffy got them instead.

Bang on AD. As I said in my rant numerous posts ago, there can be no doubt she advocated for First Nations rights and was a trail breaker and role model.... But... it appears she lied to get there and continues to lie. CBC has been a huge supporter of BSM her entire career, so I would think that the evidence for her cultural appropriation had to be extremely compelling and bombproof for them to break/publish this story (and it was CBC that did this).

No mag unicorn, this ain't outrage porn. This is someone who lied to get where she is at (at the cost of numerous other FN people not winning awards, or getting gigs, or making a decent living), and getting busted.

Imagine if the person who wins an athletic event gets fully sponsored and paid trip to the world championships in that event. But they cheated to win that. Is that a ďno one was harmedĒ scenario? Sure it doesnít matter in ďthe big pictureĒ of the world but thatís a lame and illogical response and it doesnít matter if itís a celebrity or an athlete or neither.

So who are the indigenous people that were destined to get the awards and accolades that BSM received?

Now you're just digging a deeper hole. This is tantamount to saying there weren't any worthy real FN people who deserved the awards, so it's just as well they gave them to someone who just pretended to be FN. As Joe Biden would say: "come on, man!"

OG, no need to disparage BTVS. I think they had a cultural appropriation episode too

No itís not the same. She started out in coffee houses in Toronto with contemporary artists like Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. Iím not saying that FN people are unworthy at all. Which ones were contemporary to BSM and did she prevent them from profiting off their FN status?

She probably lied, she likely gained a following because people liked her music. The only harm thatís not hypothetical is self inflicted to her own image and legacy.

“Juno winners have toured the country and the world, and the runners-up get to play the neighbourhood pubs and occasional summer festival,” said Billy Joe Green, an Anishinaabe rock and blues musician who was a nominee for Indigenous Music Album of the Year in 2009 when Sainte-Marie took home the honour.

“Resentful? I can’t afford that luxury.”

Sainte-Marie has received numerous Junos, the $50,000 Polaris Music Prize in 2015 and a Polaris heritage award for her 1964 debut album “It’s My Way!,” among a slew of other honours.

The story of her birth, childhood and identity has shifted throughout her six-decade career, with her identifying as Algonquin and Mi’kmaq before saying she was Cree, adopted from a mother in Saskatchewan.

However, CBC located her birth certificate, which says Sainte-Marie was born in 1941 in Stoneham, Mass. The document lists the baby and parents as white and includes a signature of an attending physician. CBC said Sainte-Marie’s marriage certificate, a life insurance policy, the United States census and interviews with family members corroborate..."

I think the fact that it isn't easy to say who should have won the awards if not for BSM speaks for itself. She's famous. Others are not who perhaps should be.

Ya know what? I have only so many FUCKs to give these days and IMO this isn't one of them. Just another political thread wrapped into a social justice hand wringing party.

And I thought the references to BTVS and Mrs. Beasley made a shit thread a lot more entertaining. Carry on.
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

Thereís little about it thatís political - but throw in all the right buzzwords and add some all- caps to show you really do mean it when you say ďI donít actually care - but Iíll visit the thread and post in itĒ.

Can we get a ďitís just a prank broĒ next? Its rich to watch outraged posts railing against outrage culture 😂

That's the point. We'll never know exactly which ones because Buffy scooped up the awards and accolades. Any contemporary actual FN performer could have had a shot had she not been there.

My apologies--I should have figured it out since you're always reasonable.
I watched both Buffy's--although the VS only because my kids were hogging the TV
As far as the birth certificate--I demand CBC show us the long form birth certificate. You know, the one that says she was born in Hawaii.
The woman who wrote the SF Chronicle piece is interesting--she has published a list of some 200 or so "alleged pretendians".
Meanwhile I have a friend in her 80's, NM native of Spanish origin--who claims Billy the Kid as an ancestor. We should dig up Billy and get some DNA to compare with hers.
