If you say flat screen TV, cell phone, and shaped skis instead of of TV, phone, and skis you might be old.

I went from waist 31" in my twenties to a 30" in my forties, to sometimes 29 here in my 50s. Stubby 30" inseam, exact same weight so thinking its vanity sizing.

One day (o.k., yesterday) your youngest grom expresses an interest in learning to ski. "No problem!" you blather confidently. "We can do that. We don't even need a reason."

But, shit, you muse nervously to yourself. Been a while. You haven't skied in years, since I-70 traffic robbed your soul of willingness to bother, and career/family/1000 other hobbies/etc/etc intervened. Same thing that happened to a lot of folk.

Oh well. Your knees and hips still move with at less than 40 dB of creaks, may as well give it a go. You ain't getting any younger, and hey, might be fun to revisit the whole game through the eyes of your youngster.

First step: gear check. See what you have to work with. You go out to the gear closet to see what your sorry quiver looks like these days. It's back there behind the bikes somewhere. There they are! Youngest pair of skis are some Rossi Bandits. You squint worryingly through your bifocals. And are those.... Linkens... mounted on there? Why yes, they are. They're next to some 205 Olins with freaking MRRs. You manage to locate a single boot, a tired black/yellow series one Terminator. You shake it. Out plummets either a mold-crusted fun size Snickers or a dessicated mouse remnant, hard to say.
    Oh dear.

You log onto the Powdermag forums (errrr..... TGR...) to start researching ski technology from this century. Your user ID still works. (You can't remember any of your aliases). It's only 20-odd years old, and it's only been a decade-plus since you tried it. You type in "skis with >85 waist" sit back, and await the rich reading to come.

Figuring out the current scene is gonna be a bit uphill for a bit, you fear. Shoot, lift tix are probably north of $50 by now.
But staring down the barrel of your 6th decade: no finer time to get back into it. There's still time. Otherwise you'll keep putting off what you can still do, and even want to do, and then one year you'll wake up (or not) and it will be too late.

2023/24 looks to be on. Kiddo is EXCITED. Hallelujah! Holy shit. Where's the Tylenol?
    Holy shit!!! Linkens!!!

    Weight gain...
Quit drinking, especially to the fuck dinner point.. Gained 30 pounds in a year (I was down to 110 at the bottom)
Stop smoking cigarettes.. +20 pounds in a year
Roughly + 2 pounds a year since.. While coaching soccer and doing scout hiking trips every month, skiing every other weekend.
Now the nest is empty and the energy to drive 6 hours to ski 4 hours is harder to find. I'm gonna get really fat LOL I'm 185 now.
But playing drums for 90 minutes every weekend is pretty good exercise. + yard work. That's my saving grace right now..
Go that way really REALLY fast. If something gets in your way, TURN!

Whoo hoo! Apparently, according to the TRGs I’m young, because I’ve worn the same size jeans since HS - 30x32. Not sure what to do about the numbers on my birth certificate.

I only put on 2", does that mean I win? At the very least we need to let buttabrain know I'm not the fattest old guy here.

Hmm, according to that at 6' 2" 144 pounds is the lower end of "normal weight". That strikes me as a tad lean.

About 10 years back I got a new phone, went out for an uplifting power walk with tunes and this was one of the free songs that came with the phone.

    The Berlina.

Those guys rocked. Hopefully they still do.

First time we ran into them they had a keg and plate of charcuterie layed out as a buffet halfway across Laguna traverse.

Their place had the best pizza and music.

the lowest I got for a 5'8" is a fasting weight of 162, which is normal on the BMI and that was even with a bunch of biking & ski touring

Then I got the E-bike and I hit a 159 fasting weight, Ride one of those things for 45 min, take a pulse and its 100-110 which puts you in zone 2, the fat burning zone

I swear by the Jenny McCarthy “Lazy Fat Fuck Diet.”
She used to be the health and dating advice columnist for FHM.
One year a roommate left a November issue laying around, this is early oughts. In it some guy wrote in saying he wanted to lose weight for the holidays. Said he lounged around on the couch drinking beer and eating chips.
Jenny’s reply was to the effect of “Dear Lazy Fat Fuck: you can continue to lounge around on the couch, BUT no more beer and no more chips. Eat the following for the next 7 days and you’ll lose 10 lbs:
    1. Bowl of fresh fruit for breakfast
    2. Lean protein and green beans for lunch
    3. Salad as big as your head for dinner.”

It actually works. What’s more is that the same basic diet showed up in issues of Cycling and Outside, plus a personal trainer buddy of mine uses it as his base diet for his clients.

I was 180+ back in August and after the initial 7 days I dropped approx 10 lbs and since have been more or less sticking to this meal plan at least 3 days a week and have been hovering between 160 and 165 consistently (gained a few pounds at Thanksgiving visiting the folks, though).

I can confirm that a diet if 90% beer, cigarettes, and hard stuff and 10% food of any kind results in extreme weight loss. Give up the chips and say fuck dinner altogether.. Liquid lunch and dinner FTW. Only problem is you won't continue to live long getting old..

In the past 10 years I'm down 10 lbs down to 145 and my Levi's went from 33 x 33 to 32 x 31 if I could find them. And I eat about 1/2 of a pie every day with my 12 cups of coffee.
