One of the Giant Blimp Hangars in Tustin is No More

I just saw that one of the gigantic WWII era blimp hangars in Tustin, California burnt to the ground today. Anyone familiar with that area will surely have seen these hangars. They are absolutely massive.

Certainly among the largest. And they looked even bigger because there really wasn't anything around them.

I lived close to it back in college. At.the time, there were strawberry field all around them. And orange groves a couple of blocks from my apartment.

Would love to take one across the Atlantic. Once they get the interior all decked out.

I like it. Lots of cool applications for a modern airship I think. I’ve never gone whale watching but I think if I could do it in a blimp I would.

    Oh the humanity!

I do hope they can do something with the remaining hangar. It's just so fucking impressive.

Bummer about the hangar but at least it looks like there won't be much of a mess left to clean up.

In my experience, airships are always full of Nazis, so that’s a negative.

(My experience consists of watching the third Indiana Jones movie, and some unresearched assumptions about the Hindenburg.)

Wow! Thx for posting. I hadn’t heard this yet. I grew up very close by back when it was an active heli base and the Goodyear blimp used to park at the base for maintenance. I could walk to the base. Pretty unfortunate.

I grew up in the O.C., It used to be just orchards and farm fields between Tustin and El Toro.

Myth Busters would film at the Moffett field hangars up in the bay area.

One of the Giant Blimp Hangars in Tustin is No More

I had classmates that lived in some of the old farm boss houses with their families in Tustin. My pop had a friend that lived in one of the homes at what’s now the Irvine ranch historic park. I remember visiting him when I was little.

My folks first home was build in 1972. Suburb next to the train tracks that ran next to the Tustin marine base. Helicopters used to fly along the track alignments carrying big equipment. I think urban studies student still learn about Irvine in some of their master planning courses.

Better get the range worked out too - it can only get you 2/3 of the way across the pond.

And at 60 knots that’s gonna be a long boring wind-buffeted trip.

I was stationed at Moffett Field in the mid-70s. We used to pull guard duty in those blimp hangers. All 3 hangers had catwalks way up high inside that we had to patrol. Hanger One (the one in mythbusters) was made of metal and technically was a dirigible hanger, not a blimp hanger. Hangers 2 & 3 where made of wood and were the blimp hangers.

Those wooden hangers were tinderboxes and fire danger was a huge concern.

Glad no one got hurt in that SoCal hanger fire.

It would be cool to have a blim with a cargo the size of an NFL stadium.

I was just in Irvine for a swim meet this past spring. I went out for dinner one night in Orange and I was impressed there was still at least one inland town that didn't look exactly like the generic blah that is Orange County for the most part.
